Two reasons. First the in charge politicians told the police to let the rioters do what they want to do with no opposition. And second, the rioters know they are free to even kill and if jailed they will be released with no charges.

Seems to me anyone carrying a shield and a baseball bat would stand out in a crowd pretty easily. There needs to be a concentrated effort to have groups of such armed “deplorables” whenever a pro trump rally is planned. Might be a deterrent.

Be very careful, remember these are paid agitators. They are being paid by someone because they want the agenda to turn violent. The vitriol was going to happen if any person other than a Democrat had taken office. This is planned. Has nothing to do with Trump. People need to be very careful going forward. First a scruff here and there, soon it will lead to full blown escalation. It’s being supported from the top and pushed up from the bottom. Top down bottom up.

Yep that’s what it takes. In my case I got the crap beaten out of me, but it stopped the bulling, and we became friends.
While we can cheer the response of “our side” to the masked and violent interlopers, I want to warn everyone that this is the exact type of conflict on the streets that occurred between communists and NAZI brownshirts in Germany in the 20s and early 30s.
I don’t mean that the masked men are communists or that the Trumps supporters are NAZIs but when conflict in the streets occurs instead of civil discourse, any country is headed for a cataclysm.
You could argue that the left is the party of anarchy and ‘resistance’ vs. ordinary Americans but that doesn’t solve the problem of the widening chasm between the left and right.
What’s next? Both sides begin to deploy bully boys in identifying armbands and shirts to attack the other side. So far we’ve only seen a small group of leftists or anarchists
at Trump rallies. But is a response by Trumpers far behind?

Look, if you are going to attend such an event, you should go with the *expectation* that there is going to be violence.
If you are going to be in a group, you should divide labor so as to get the best results. This can be from simple to complex, and different situations require different preparations.
If a vehicle based attack is possible, you need to post armed “pickets” with radios on the routes of approach, and pick a gathering site that is at least partially protected from vehicles, such as being surrounded with concrete obstacles like planters.
The next layer of defense is against charges by attackers, typically masked, as happened in this case. They need to be interdicted before they can get to the group. Importantly, they used pepper spray to attack with impunity, so defenders should have goggles at ready to protect themselves, and to use ‘hard’ defensive weapons like spring or snap batons to quickly neutralize them.
Next there should be an “equipment man”, who has things like high test (250lb), pre-looped nylon tie handcuffs. Assume one for each wrist and one between two wrist loops, and another for the ankles. This guy doubles as the communications person.
Everyone in the group should have a short list of distinct key words to yell to indicate that something is happening, if they spot something.
