President Donald Trump made good on a long-time conservative goal in his first proposed budget Thursday morning, targeting the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities for complete elimination.
Trumps budget would zero out the $445 million budget for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a substantial source of funding for programming and broadcast operations on public TV stations and NPR radio stations nationwide, per the Washington Post.
The budget would also eliminate the budgets for both national endowments, which stood at $148 million each in 2016, as well as $230 million for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which supports libraries and museums. Additional cuts would affect two tourist mainstays in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art.
Combined, the four arts organizations account for less than 0.02 percent of the U.S. governments $4.6 trillion budget.
Republicans have long put the NEA and the CPB in their budget crosshairs. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan attempted to shut down the NEA, but backed down from the plans after a task force including actor and Reagan friend Charlton Heston advised against it. Reagan did, however, make major cuts to the NEAs budget.

The funding for the UN needs to be eliminated.
Not a fan of the NPR talk radio, but the classical stations are nice. When they get to news I tune out. AND... Luckily there is a commercial classical station WBQK that I can tune in.
Big Bird can afford his own TV channel.
Winning.
The one I was at was always crying poor but there was always money for new equipment, high end travel for the selected, costly field productions, and overpaid management.
The peons who did all the day to day rowing the galley were always told to suck it up and be glad there was anything at all.
Jerk tech manager would have hired cheap illegal labor if he could.
A wonderful idea.
Defund those three, then totally defund the EPA, Planned Parenthood and the UN.
All need to go: 10th Amendment says they should have never been.
Need to axe lots more.
Logic doesn't matter to the RATs. Perception is reality, especially to the vast majority of today's electorate.
The Left has many billionaires who could afford to pay $400 million per year to keep both PBS and NPR running. Let them pay for it, not the American taxpayer.
Cutting off funds for the NEA will be trumpeted as a “major blow” to funding for “the arts”. That will be a lie.
Progressives would have everything funded 100% by the federal government if they could, and build the bureaucracies to dole it out with all their regulations.
They like to portray what the federal government does as what “the nation” is doing, and any cut thereto as a blow to what “the nation” is doing. When it comes to the “arts” it’s a lie.
Government funding for “the arts” is only about 7% of the total amount provided to the arts by foundations, charitable organizations and private philanthropy. That 93% is more representative of “the nation” than is the money being controlled by the NEA, because it is made with our Liberty, our choices, not government bureaucracies.
THIS IS GREAT NEWS.....CUT MORE FROM GOBERMENT PROGRAMS LIKE FOOD STAMPS AND WELFARE.
YES!!!!!!! YES, YES, YES!!!!!!
Why should hard working Americans who NEVER indulge in the arts of the few, have to pay into those arts that are experienced by so few.
It’s not that the arts are not worth supporting, but they should be supported by private donation.
500 million dollars annually, and more of our money.
It adds up. 5 billion dollars over 5 years.
“Not a fan of the NPR talk radio”
What is it with NPR’s announcers? I’m not sure if it’s a local thing or national, but the people who read the news and such on NPR talk in such a way that is soooooo different than any conversation I’ve ever heard. They talk in that real soft spoken, hoity toity, weird kind of way. Ought to be defunded for that reason alone!
It’s way past time to stop taxpayer funding these Leftist media outlets. They are well funded through private sources.
THIS IS GREAT NEWS.....CUT MORE FROM GOBERMENT PROGRAMS LIKE FOOD STAMPS AND WELFARE.
They speak the news the way golf announcers describe the golf action....”Today Kim Jung scores a nuclear hole in one by irradiating Los Angeles...this and other news on ALL THINGS CONSIDERED...(cue jouncy happy music!)!
Winning!
