THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
COLE PORTER
In 1957, Les Girls became the last Gene Kelly film for MGM and the last Cole Porter score written for Hollywood. None of its songs made its way into the Great American Songbook. The title sounded too much like lay girls, so when NBC adapted it as a sitcom for Larry Blyden in the early Sixties, the title was changed to Larrys Girls.
ALADDINCole lost his other leg in 1958, and the fire went out. His last score was for television, a 1958 DuPont Show of the Month for CBS that was telecast live. Viewed in the long run, True Love was to be Coles swan song.
CYRIL RITCHARD: COME TO THE SUPERMARKET IN OLD PEKINGIn 1977, during his last days, an enterprising journalist got an interview with this legend of British stage and screen. Cyril said that his favorite role was Captain Hook in Broadway and televisions Peter Pan, a well written turn that permitted him to chew the scenery.
This is a rare kinescope from Aladdin, which pre-empted both Leave it to Beaver and Zane Grey Theater one Friday night in February 1958.
If the song bears an interesting resemblance to Irving Berlins Puttin on the Ritz, it may not be a coincidence.

...memories...
Elvis had a song called “Old Shep”
about a man thinking he needed to put-down his old dog.
My dad bought the album it was on and was playing it one day
while we were all sitting around eating lunch...
“Old Shep” made my brother (3 years older than me) cry
and I was laughing because the tears were running down his cheeks
and dripping into his chicken noodle soup.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
COLE PORTER
ANYTHING GOES
BLOW, GABRIEL, BLOWFrom 1958 onward, Cole stayed at his apartment at the Waldorf in New York, his mansion in the Berkshires of Massachusetts or his home in Santa Monica, depending upon his mood. He was a recluse, shunning his old friends and attended only by the handsome hunks that took care of him. In October 1964 at age 73, his kidneys finally failed him, and he shuffled off his mortal coils in Santa Monica.
The basis of the 2004 biopic De-Lovely was the archangel Gabriel producing a heavenly version of This is Your Life as Coles spirit walked away from his piano. The final number is this chorus which created a satisfying end for the movie.
Blow, Gabriel, Blow
Tune in next weekend for George Gershwin and the Great American Songbook.

George will take as long as Irving or Cole, or maybe even longer. He was one of the greatest giants of American music.
