THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

COLE PORTER

ANYTHING GOES

“BLOW, GABRIEL, BLOW”

From 1958 onward, Cole stayed at his apartment at the Waldorf in New York, his mansion in the Berkshires of Massachusetts or his home in Santa Monica, depending upon his mood. He was a recluse, shunning his old friends and attended only by the handsome hunks that took care of him. In October 1964 at age 73, his kidneys finally failed him, and he shuffled off his mortal coils in Santa Monica.

The basis of the 2004 biopic “De-Lovely” was the archangel Gabriel producing a heavenly version of “This is Your Life” as Cole’s spirit walked away from his piano. The final number is this chorus which created a satisfying end for the movie.

“Blow, Gabriel, Blow”

Tune in next weekend for George Gershwin and the Great American Songbook.
