A bill in the Illinois state legislature that would create "Barack Obama Day" earned praise from Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Thursday.
"It's incredibly proud for Illinois that the president came from Illinois. I think it's awesome, and I think we should celebrate it," Rauner said at an event.
There are three bills being debated in the Illinois state legislature that would create a holiday on Aug. 4 (Obama's birthday) in honor of the 44th president; two in the House that would make a state holiday, closing schools and the government, and another in the Senate that would devise a commemorative holiday.
Rauner voiced support for the Senate bill, which would create Barack Obama Day.
"I don't think it should be a formal holiday with paid, forced time off, but I think it should be a day of acknowledgment and celebration," he said.
Other bills have been proposed in the Land of Lincoln that seek to honor Obama, who before becoming president, worked as a community organizer in Chicago and later served as a state senator and U.S. senator from Illinois.
One piece of legislation in the works would rename a 270-mile stretch of Interstate 55 as the "Barack Obama Expressway." Another bill would rename the Tri-State Tollway after Obama.
As for naming freeways after Barry Soetero, I guess I will make sure to avoid driving through Illinois in the future.
Bonzo isn’t the president anymore. Why does he need a “day”.
Why not REAGAN DAY after Illinois native born, favorite son PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN?
Gov. Rauner = RINO (also traitor to the unborn)
[Why does he need a day]
Correct. OBAMA’S “day” has come and gone. No legacy for him.
Obama day. Where everyone has to go to the golf course and screw off.
Obama Day aka Not Hillary Day!!
He didn’t come from Illinois, he came from Chicago, by way of Indonesia.
By the govenors logic- there should be a Ronald Reagan day
Amen, Stars and Stripes Forever.
Seriously?
Because a more conservative candidate will win Illinois?
Obama Day?
Why not an ILLINOIS PRESIDENT’S DAY?
Abraham Lincoln
Ulysses S. Grant
Ronald Reagan (native born)
Barack Obama
Rauner didn't win Chicago [Cook County] but won everything else.
So, depending upon what the Dhims nominate, there might be possibility.
how about friday the 13’th as obama day and the rest of the year as George W Bush days?
Bruce must be smoking a lot of that “medical” marijuana. There’s only one President who “came from Illinois” and his name ain’t Barack. Try making a visit to Dixon sometime, Gov.
Didn’t we just HAVE illegal alien doesn’t work day on Monday?
Lincoln, too (even if he was born in KY).
On a related note, Indiana has had more Vice Presidents than any other state and even has its own "Dan Quayle Vice Presidential Museum" with exhibits on the previous five Vice Presidents. I imagine they will add a "Mike Pence wing" in the future.
I’m sure more than a few loons in IL would like to replace “Land O’Lincoln” with “Land O’bama.”
If you want to primary him fine, advocate primarying him over substantive issues and not meaningless crap like his. They can almost certainly pass a “let’s suck off Obama” bill over his veto anyway.
