Many African-Americans are expressing outrage over a testy exchange between President Donald Trump and a veteran black journalist, with many considering the incident to be the latest indication of his inability to relate to them.
Already skeptical of Trump, many blacks said they were exasperated by the fact that, during his news conference on Thursday, the new president asked April Ryan, longtime White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, to help broker a meeting for him with black lawmakers.
"Will you meet with the Congressional Black Caucus?" Ryan asked. Trump responded: "I would. You want to set up the meeting? Are they friends of yours?"
The exchange set off a firestorm on social media as many black people balked at Trump's suggestion of an assumed relationship between Ryan and CBC members because they are of the same race.
Susan Rice, U.N. ambassador under the Obama administration, tweeted an article about the incident and called Trump's remarks "notably offensive."
"I'm also really pleased he didn't ask her to sweep and mop in the room where the press conference was being held," Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, a former CBC chairman, quipped during an MSNBC interview on Friday.
Adding to the ire: It was the second time in less than 30 days and during Black History Month that Trump said something that came across as indifferent toward black people. The president was ridiculed Feb. 1 for praising abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who died in 1895, as someone "who's done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more."
After Thursday's news conference, the CBC tweeted a copy of a letter, dated Jan. 19 and addressed to Trump, requesting a meeting. The caucus said although it got no response to that letter,

Note to offended blacks.
Get over yourselves.

‘testy’? That it was done in public and full view is great,, it’s about time to reveal the DEms and their operatives for what they are..
Exactly. I watched the exchange. You had to read between the lines, but I think it was Trump's way of saying there has been zero outreach to me.
To hell with them. And yes I bet she is friendly with them.
The question by April Ryan had that little edge of racism in it, that touch of an accusation that Trump would not be able to answer her question with a positive response.
Mr. Trump hammered her with her history without even mentioning it.
Would you set up the meeting? Are they friends of yours?
April Ryan quickly came back that she was just a reporter. We all have her on record now. So she better stop playing the little political games behind the scenes or she will be outed as a CBC operative.
Then Trump took the open door to slam Elijah Cummings who turned down a meeting for political reasons. Trump will not give up on the inner city issue and one by one he will out those that are part of the problem and not part of the solution. He wants results in the inner city. Do not stand in his way and infer he is a racist.
While you are at it, what is the latest on Chicago murder rate?
During the Cuban missile crisis, a reporter from ABC worked with a KGB informant of his to get communication going between Kennedy and Kruschev. So why can’t a reporter help get communication between rump and the Black’s Only Congress Club?
Sorry, no disrespect intended, meant Trump.
Ok....I wont forget.
Because they haven’t mastered the art of shake downs they need to attend J.Jacksons school of spin.
“Many blacks” = 3 people who are perpetually offended.
Every so called Journalist in that room were Democrat Operatives.
The “complaints” seem to ignore that the reporter Trump was speaking to is not among those complaining.
“”My guess is that the “American” part is offensive to them now.””
I hadn’t thought of that but that’s the way they are really behaving, isn’t it? Well, too bad! There isn’t a shortage of people willing to donate funds to get them back to their homeland and that goes for every other “foreigner” who slams the country - including the ones who come in illegally across our southern borders.
If they could read, I would recommend “Out of America” by Keith Richburg who is a black man and a Washington Post reporter in Africa at one time. He thought they all should go to Africa to appreciate more of what the country of their birth has given to them - GIVEN - no strings attached and no special privileges - just like the rest of us born here! Make it or don’t - it’s up to you!
As for the other minorities - oh! oh! offensive term - they come from a country/countries whose leaders - present and former - are encouraging them to break OUR LAWS and want to see US PUNISHED for wanting our laws to be obeyed.
Are we all going nuts or are we already there?
Like Muhammad Ali said, after going to Africa to fight George Foreman....'Thank God my granddaddy got on that boat.'
“”Like Muhammad Ali said, after going to Africa to fight George Foreman....’Thank God my granddaddy got on that boat.””
Good one. Richburg wrote about standing by the water and watching the bodies float downstream from the Hutu/Tutsi massacres. Remember the movie Hotel Rwanda where trucks drove over bodies in the roads? Is this what these people prefer? Can’t help but wonder!
I thought that was John Lewis - no matter - they all look alike... WOW! Such denigrating, offensive statements to be making!!! I’ll have to watch that....
The spitting OFFENSE that never happened was when dear old Nancy was ready to take up the Speaker of the House role and it was the highlight of her life!! Remember - some people thought Steny Hoyer was carrying her purse in that picture? LOL!!!
They are “outraged” because they had to use plan B. The so called reporter is clearly a RAT operative who wanted Trump embarrassed because he has not met with the Black Caucus (who kept Alan West out so it’s really the black RAT Caucus) Trump instead makes it clear they are the ones who are not meeting with him blowing up the usual “Republicans are racist” narrative. In order to maintain that narrative they had to TRUMP-up this “outrage” but it’s not the result they wanted.
Oh, Lewis was there, but my former house rep, the reverend Cleaver is the one who made that allegation.
