The White House has found ways to end protection for 'Dreamers' while shielding Trump from blowback

hile President Trump wavered Thursday on whether he will stop shielding from deportation people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children, his aides have identified at least two ways to quietly end their protections without his fingerprints.

An executive order has already been drafted to end the program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, that allows hundreds of thousands of the immigrants to live and work openly in the U.S. Trump used that legal mechanism to great fanfare to expand deportation authority and restrict entry to the U.S.

But with the president showing less willingness to sign such an order, advisors have begun to explore alternatives. Their hunt suggests that the White House is hesitant to publicly target a well-organized group of immigrants who have prominent public backing, including from President Obama, and to whom Trump has shown sympathy.

Trump weighs mobilizing 100,000 National Guard troops for immigration roundups »

“DACA is a very, very difficult subject for me,” Trump conceded during a rambling East Room news conference Thursday, promising to address the issue “with heart.… It’s one of the most difficult subjects I have because you have these incredible kids.”

Trump is caught between two camps. His supporters count the end of deportation protections as a key component of his promise to strengthen immigration enforcement. In campaign speeches, Trump repeatedly promised to end the program on “day one” of his presidency and called the protections “unconstitutional executive amnesty.”

On the other side, a mix of stakeholders, including the 750,000 people who have won work permits, want to see even more immigrants allowed to come out of the shadows. And some Republican strategists are concerned that suspending DACA could energize Latino voters and liberal activists in key congressional districts during the midterm elections next year.

Fake News? It’s the LA Times.

AMEN TO THAT!!

LA is run by the illegals and filled with them. Last time I was over there it is increasingly hard to communicate with service oriented folk.

Yes, but we also don’t put kids in prison for the sins of the parents. These kids may be here illegally, but they did not break the law. I see why some consider these children a “hybrid”.

These children’s suffering is not only because their parents broke the law. It’s also because we have had 30 years of government officials refusing to enforce the law. As a result we have children and young adults that know nothing of their birth country, thoroughly acculturated into the US.

Many of these kids don’t know Spanish. Many would never be accepted into their home communities. The US is primarily at fault for letting this stupid system exist for so many years.

No worries, just wait to they commit a crime and then deport them.

The first time they run a stop light or speed.. deported.

That should get 90% of them within a few years.

There’s a direct quote ... If the LA Slimes is faking that, a possibility that I will not entirely discount, they’ve taken FAKE NEWS to a level even CNN hasn’t yet attempted.

It might make sense to suspend any more DACA approvals. Then deport those who break the law or don't stay in school or employed. Give the ones that remain a time limit to gain citizenship, or they leave.

That's what I'd like to see, anyway.

I’ve been taking flak here for doing just that.

It does not matter how old they were when they became illegal aliens, they are illegal aliens, subject to deportation.

Obama illegally decided to defer their deportation.

Time is up.

End DACA now.

You are exactly right. I’ve been saying that for a long time. When we put people in prison, we are separating families. Why should people here illegally be treated better than actual US citizens. At least those here illegally who are deported have the option of taking their kids with them — not the case with prisoners.

Children of criminals do not get to benefit from the crimes of the parents. Bank robbers kids don’t get to keep the money.
Send them home with their parents.

I live in an area where those ‘incredible kids’ are outnumbering the white kids. A huge majority of them grow up to be thugs. Their mom and dad may be hard working, humble people when they come here. The kids grow up to be gang banger thugs.
Besides, I don’t think citizens hard earned money should be paying for their education, etc.

Illegal aliens cannot apply for citizenship.
They would have to return home and apply for permanent resident status and then after some time apply for citizenship.
DACA is simply a deferred action on their deportation. It does not make them legal. It was an illegal action on the part of Obama and should be stopped immediately.

Left out here by the LAT. Trump also said it's the law to that effect and need to work with Cong who may balk at it.

I think it has to do with being convicted of a crime or associating with a gang.

Not positive though.

But supposedly there are some provisions in Obama’s “Dreamer” program that allow the status to be revoked under certain conditions.

So what to do with the DACA approvals that already happened? I give them some credit for taking the risk and coming out of the shadows. You know that nutty court would overturn any attempt to remove them from the US before their DACA status expired.
