JOHN COLTRANE: “EV’RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE”

It’s a measure of the greatness of a song that it can move from one genre to another and not lose anything in the process. This is a slow, soulful look at the tune and a jazz masterpiece from 1961.

There are quite a few recent interpretations of the song coming up. It’s funny that the older versions work better.

SARAH VAUGHAN: “EV’RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE”

This 1961 recording is from a studio session, and she is backed only by electric guitar and bass. This is what pure simplicity can do with a song.

Lke Coltrane, Annie also slows it down, but her 1990 rendition is totally different. This is a more contemplative version with a French touch.

Rod’s career came out of its eclipse in 2002 when he tackled the Great American Songbook. This version uses the verse that Cole wrote for the musical. Phil Ramone produced, and it’s exceptional work.
