Researchers have discovered a new cave in Israel that they say once held Dead Sea Scrolls, making it just the 12th such cave of its kind found. The find is thus a milestone, according to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The cave was looted long before the archeologists excavated it, but inside they found telltale signs that scrolls had been there: broken storage jars and lids on its edges and in a tunnel in the back.

11. The Scrolls appear to be the library of a Jewish sect. The library was hidden away in caves around the outbreak of the First Jewish Revolt (A.D. 66-70) as the Roman army advanced against the rebel Jews.

Essenes. They were stored by the Essenes.

Worth noting that Ishmael eventually repented while Esau did not.

Assyrians. Romans. Crusaders. Muslims.

The same reason why every good Jewish story about a rabbinic debate starts off with “three rabbis were hiding in an attic...”

I thought the Assyrians took Israel into captivity while it was a hundred years or so later that the Babylonians took Judea in general, and Jerusalem in particular, captive.

Really need to get the Cave of the Patriarchs back at some point to check for someone’s head.

I am just glad they didn’t find any more Commandments. I have trouble with some of the 10 that we already know about. ;>)

We’re creative at hiding stuff.

Now we have to be more creative at finding the stuff we hid.

I was listening to an Egyptologist speaking at Lanier Theological Library in Houston, TX. He said there is a vault in a bank in Zurich full of Dead Sea Scroll fragments that can be purchased for several millions of dollars.

Maybe?

Hahaha. There are actually 613 commandments with the majority dealing with the Temple and it’s operations. -)

With you here. The Top Ten have seen me stubble more than once. :

Exciting find, wish I could see it. I’d be thrilled to have a piece of broken pottery from this cave.

The Bible doesn’t call them Ten Commandments. It calls them ‘aseret had’varim’ - ‘ten sayings’ or ‘ten things’. The text of the ‘Ten Commandments’ contains more than ten mitzvot.

Yes, it is. Can you imagine what all is there still waiting to be uncovered? Laying there, by G-d’s will, for thousands of years now being reveled?

Are we in the time of Revelation or what?

Nobody knows for sure, but it was done over periods of several centuries (as many scrolls are much older than others). It was probably to protect them from invading armies (especially the Romans). They are the most well-preserved and oldest copies of the Old Testament books ever found.

Not Mitzvah or Mitzvot? Or Aseret ha-Dibrot?

Yes. The commandment to not work on Shabbat also says we are to work the other six days of the week. Is this what you are saying?

There were 15 commandments, but Moses broke one of the tablets while coming down from Mount Sinai.

At least that's what was shown in a documentary I saw on the topic.

Or maybe it wasn't a documentary...
