~ Hall of Heroes ~ Charles George Info from here. |
|
Charles George (August 23, 1932November 30, 1952) was a U.S. Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat on November 30, 1952, during the Korean War. He was fatally wounded when he threw himself on a grenade to protect other soldiers in his company and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. George was born in Cherokee, North Carolina. He entered service at Whittier, North Carolina. At the time of George's death in battle he held the rank of Private First Class in Company C of the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. The action for which he received the Medal of Honor was near Songnae-dong, Korea. |
The Medal of Honor was awarded on March 18, 1954. The citation read: Pfc. George, a member of Company C, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and outstanding courage above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy on the night of November 30, 1952. He was a member of a raiding party committed to engage the enemy and capture a prisoner for interrogation. Forging up the rugged slope of the key terrain feature, the group was subjected to intense mortar and machine gun fire and suffered several casualties. Throughout the advance, he fought valiantly and, upon reaching the crest of the hill, leaped into the trenches and closed with the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. When friendly troops were ordered to move back upon completion of the assignment, he and 2 comrades remained to cover the withdrawal. While in the process of leaving the trenches a hostile soldier hurled a grenade into their midst. Pfc. George shouted a warning to 1 comrade, pushed the other soldier out of danger, and, with full knowledge of the consequences, unhesitatingly threw himself upon the grenade, absorbing the full blast of the explosion. Although seriously wounded in this display of valor, he refrained from any outcry which would divulge the position of his companions. The 2 soldiers evacuated him to the forward aid station and shortly thereafter he succumbed to his wound. Pfc. George's indomitable courage, consummate devotion to duty, and willing self-sacrifice reflect the highest credit upon himself and uphold the finest traditions of the military service. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

I think they’re gorgeous, too, but I could be a bit biased. LOL!
I hoped Raivis would be the daddy but was told today that the momma was pregnant when she was dumped by her previous owners. Whoever the daddy was, the two of them created some beautiful offspring. The third kitten is a beauty too.

Aww...that would have been great if they'd been Raivis's kittens. He had such gorgeous markings, and so do these. Very unusual. If I hadn't gotten orange kitties, I wanted a Calico. No one I knew at the time had one, though. But I wouldn't trade mine in for anything now! 💜

I still miss Raivis terribly. He was such a sweet boy and pretty too. It would have been awesome if these kittens were his. But they’re pretty awesome in their own right. :-) The daddy must have been a pretty feller. Momma is just an ordinary orange and white cat and the kittens have unusual coloring. Not Arabelle so much but the other two. More buff and white.
Brown/black tabbies have always been my favorite. They look ordinary to most people but when you look closely at their markings, they can be so cool. Percy has what looks like the outlines of a guitar on the top of his head.

Good evening/morning, radu....she is down and the light is off. Now we have a carousel on the lawn....and we also had several bigger birds crash into the picture window right in front of her.
I heard the crashes in the other room, and when I checked, one was just lying in the snow below the window. I watched it for about 15 minutes and didn’t see any movement. Later it was gone and I didn’t see any paw prints around the depression.
Did you dodge the snow? We had BRIGHT sunshine and LOTS of drip, drip, drip. I had to beat the garbage can with a hammer to get the lid open....completely iced over.

Good evening, Mooch....did winter find you yet?
Are you staying warm?
Below zero temps here, then a day up to 42, then back into the 20s. Can’t make up its mind.

What a cool marking the guitar would be!
I used to have THE sweetest long-haired gray tabby named Frosty. He was so lazy that he was run over because he couldn’t be bothered to move out of the street. Broke my heart.
I got him at the pound. I didn’t GO there to get a cat, but he reached through the bars to me and...well....he was mine at that moment!
I keep hoping that Raivis will some day wander back into your life. Or do you know for sure that he’s dead?

Is the carousel something new? I don’t recall hearing about that one before.
Sounds like the sunshine was an uplift for y’all after all the cloudy weather and snow, but not so good for the birds. Hope the one you saw on the ground is ok since it appears to have left on its own.
We had a few spits of snow here but that was it. There was a little more in the north part of the state but it was scattered light showers. Next chance for any precip is Thursday and that should be rain.
Yuck with having to beat the trash cans to throw stuff away. That’s just too much cold creating too much work. No fun.

I thought it was pretty cool too. Haven’t had a cat with a guitar making on its head before.
Poor Frosty! Too bad he couldn’t decide to be lazy in the yard rather than in the street. :-(
We haven’t found a body so he wasn’t hit by a car, but that usually means they’ve been caught by coyotes. Nothing to find except a bone or two. I ran into that a few years ago when our potbelly pig was still alive. Found a shoulder blade and a jaw bone at the edge of his pen but have no clue which cat they were from.
The fact he hasn’t been seen by anyone makes us certain he’s gone forever. He was around for a few months before he got brave enough to let me pet him and he spent most of that time either here or next door at Hubby’s cousin’s farm.
Hope is gone.

The carousel is a couple of weeks old....and yes, it is new. She is seeing it every day.
Hope you get your rain later in the week.
The ice broke up pretty easily on the barrels, but they were completely covered. I’ve moved them out from under the dripping eaves. Which reminds me...I need to go put them back against a wall instead of the middle of the driveway.

A never-ending adventure with her, isn’t it? No telling what she’ll come up with next. At least the carousel shouldn’t be as frightening to her as the men who climb the trees and houses.
It would be nice to get some more rain this week. The ground is still a little soft from the rain we’ve gotten this month but we can use a lot more. We’ll see what happens.
I’m just hoping they don’t move the date they expect the rain to move in. We want clouds that day so the groundhog won’t see its shadow. LOL!
Yes, moving the trash cans might be a good idea. Don’t need you backing over them in the morning!
