Calexit: Group has 180 days to collect signatures for secession

California has granted a pro-secession group 180 days to gather enough signatures to get their Calexit initiative on the ballot. From the Hill:

The California secretary of state’s office announced that the group could begin collecting signatures on Thursday.

The group needs 585,407 signatures from registered voters over the next 180 days to qualify for the ballot.

The mechanism here is not very straightforward. If the Yes California Independence Campaign can gather the needed signatures in time, that would put an initiative on the ballot next year. That initiative, if passed, would change portions of the California constitution and set up a California nationhood election in 2019. From the LA Times:

If the measure gets on the ballot and gains approval by a majority of voters, it would repeal clauses in the California Constitution stating that the state is an “inseparable part of the United States” and that the U.S. Constitution is the “supreme law of the land,” according to the title and summary prepared by the state attorney general’s office.

The measure would place another question on the ballot in 2019, asking whether California should become a separate country. If at least half of registered voters participate in that vote, with at least 55% of those voting to approve, the results would be treated as California’s declaration of independence.

If all of this sounds very fringe, keep in mind that a recent poll found 32% of Californians supported the idea of secession. So, at the very least, there should be millions of people willing to sign a petition to put this on the ballot next year. Given that this movement was accelerated by the election of Donald Trump its success or failure will probably depend on how President Trump is doing next year or, more precisely, how Democrats judge he is doing. Given the hair-on-fire response to his first week in office there’s not much reason to suppose things will settle down.

With recounts and faithless electors and protests unable to change the country’s course, angry progressives could decide secession is the only remaining path for ‘the resistance’ to take. Plus, the idea of declaring independence from Trump and ‘fly-over’ America might prove irresistible. Based on the polling, it already has for many on the left coast.

How about a 20% tax on movies they want to send over the border?

I'll check the legality on this before pressing...

If I get asked to sign, I'm going to have the names and addresses of known illegal aliens to use.

</kidding>

...kinda...

Tell Mexico they can have Califirnia if they pay for the wall. This would be great for the US. California has not been anything but a leach on the rest of the country and without California it will be over for the Democrats. Besides we will probably be able to buy it back fot next to nothing in a few years, if we would even want to. I doubt all those liberal Holloywood types and Silicon Valley elites would remain there. San Francisco and Sacramento would look like the slums of Mexico City in a couple of years. I would love to see how all those progressive libs like it if really happens.

Coverage of the “secession” topic was banished along with the Stars & Bars.

The loons in Sacratomato are the aftermath of public education.

It appears they need to participate in a revolt before the truly understand the meaning of a higher authority.

If California did vote for secession, it would come from a few big cities. Once it happened, the red areas would secede from the new nation and come back to Uncle Same. That would leave those cities isolated, and without Fed dollars to pay for their freebies.

Other than that, it may work.

Eleven state have tried this before. It did not go well for them.

The Democrats were behind that, too.

I’m totally against Calexit - the cost to extend The Wall would be exorbitant, this is, unless we can make California pay for it.

Well, should this succeed, I surely hope that President Trump requires extreme vetting for immigration into the U.S.

I would hope that criminal history, employment history, education, net worth. and amount of capital to be transferred would all be evaluated.

Not a chance I’d agree to this.

1) Even if, only 20% of the population disagrees with this treasonous act, we have an obligation to protect them as fellow citizens.

2) Did the idiots think that the electoral process only should be followed when their side wins. They’re like spoiled brats who only play a game if they win. The non-leftists had to follow decorum when they did not win. The shoe is on the other foot.

3) Execute the organizers for treason.

4) Incidentally, I don’t think this has a chance at flying, but the left, in general, really revolts me.

5) Its like the two idiot Virginia transplants in Oregon, that wanted to secede and bring the rest of the state that didn’t agree with them.

6) Counter proposal, round up all the californians that support this petition, and ship them off in barges. They’re so bright and humanitarian; should do fine.

sorry, rant off

Don’t think that event happened in Mexico, so it wouldn’t be in their history books.

I think San Diego would vote to stay, as would most of the State.

Los Angeles and San Francisco would vote to secede.

Maybe it would work, if just Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, San Francisco, Marin, Napa, and Solano Counties seceded, and all the rest voted to remain with the U.S.

Militarily, it seems unworkable. But, the “Progressives” have never let reality interfere with their schemes before...

“Can’t secede from the union. Not that I wouldn’t want them to, mind you. Let them try. Then we can go in, kick their butts, take all their stuff, and reconstruct them. Damn Yankees did it to us. Guess CA didn’t read the history books.”

If it happens, come right on in, because 40% of us here will help you, and most of us are armed. Just let us know what we need to wear to be identified as “friendlies.”

Good idea. Let’s give them the west coast and the most prolific vegetable crops in the country, along with thousands of miles of our border. Let’s be like Europe.

Wow. Brilliant!

You must be a registered voter(we know what that means) to be a valid signature.

They dont care.

Its resume building time and practice time.

Libs are socialists.

Socialists worship the dialectic because change/progress mechanism.

The dialectic requires struggle.

No struggle, no dialectic,,no change, no reason for socialism, ie they are out of a job and have zero purpose.

So they manufacture struggle when there is none.

Its why they fake hate crimes and hire fake protestors and do false flag operations and use the delphi technique when they can.

"....but sticking 45% of a population with a new government that they didn’t want or choose seems really high."

It sounds like a recipe for major resistance.
