An article in the New York Times for January 23 carried an editorialized headline: “Trump Repeats Lie About Popular Vote in Meeting With Lawmakers.” (Not “Trump Repeats Assertion” or “Trump Repeats Claim,” but “Trump Repeats Lie.” The article was not found on the opinion page of the newspaper’s print edition, but on page A1.) Reading very much like an opinion piece, the Times article stated: "President Trump used his first official meeting with congressional leaders on Monday to falsely claim that millions of unauthorized immigrants had robbed him of a popular vote majority, a return to his obsession with the election’s results even as he seeks support for his legislative agenda."

Trump nor the New York Times know how many illegal aliens are in our nation. Trump and the New York Times both know many of them vote. The illegal aliens also know that for the past 8 years (actually 24 years) that include Obama, George W Bush and Clinton, you could vote with out fear even if you were an illegal alien.
I do think Trump did win the popular "legal vote."
Attorney General Sessions will answer these questions.

Here is the basic data:
Reference Date is Jan 2015. Best I have right now.
Number of illegals in California: 2,670,000
Population of California: 38,993,940
Number of Californians registered to vote: 17,717,936
Votes for President 2016: 14,181,595
Calculated: Percent of the California population that is illegal: 6.84%
Calculated: Percent of the California Registered to vote that are illegal: 6.84% (an upper limit I believe)
Calculated: Number of illegals who are registered in California: 1,213,186
Calculated: Number of illegals who voted in California in 2016: 971,044 (an upper limit for sure – IMHO)
Any of this data could be wrong. And the great uncertainty is the percentage of Illegals that actually registered and actually voted. It seems to me to be unlikely that they would do that at the same a citizens. So I believe that the number of illegals that actually voted is some fraction of 971,044. Still potentially a big number. But not enough by itself to give Trump the popular vote.

He said “illegal votes”, not illegals voting. Now, illegals voting could easily (and probably is) be part of the illegal votes, but so could people voting in multiple states and election officials stuffing the ballot box.
Well, since Trump has ordered the FBI to investigate these fraudulent votes, esp. in CA (and I forget which other state), we’ll see who is lying. /of course we know it’s not Trump

California has made it ridiculously easy for illegals to vote then obamao went on tv and said they wouldn’t be punished if they did; not in so many words of course because that’s just how he rolls his blunts but close enough.
And the Mediasaurus Tyrannus keeps shrieking “WOLF!!,” as it slowly sinks into the tar pits of history. It’s era has passed, and citizens wonder how it ever roamed the earth given its blundering movements and inability to recognize the change in climate.
NYT finds it easy to prove a negative — “some sources say ...”
There are somewhere between 10 and 20 million illegals in this country, many of whom have been here for years. Is it crazy to think that 10% of them voted, which would be 1-2 million illegal votes?
Who knows lies better than the New York Times? That’s their stock in trade.

Notably, earlier today, CNN quietly capitulated to the Trump camp on the size of the inauguration crowd brouhaha.
Well, ya’ll better be checking CA .. it’s obvious illegals voted there - and 13% of illegals have admitted they voted.

How come you can do reasonable analysis and the NYT just declines and instead calls the President a liar?
