An armed passerby fatally shot a suspect who had opened fire on a trooper in an apparent ambush attack as the law enforcement officer, who was responding to a shots fired call, stopped to investigate a car crash along Interstate 10 near Tonopah on Thursday.
The incident started shortly before 4:30 a.m. with a 911 call from a driver east of California who said somebody shot at his car from the median, television station KPHO in Phoenix reported.
According to Col. Frank Milstead, the director of DPS, the trooper was responding to the shots fired call when he came upon a single-vehicle rollover wreck near Tonopah. A woman had been ejected from that vehicle.
The trooper immediately stopped and began laying out flares.

Danged cool. I hope he had a carry permit. Wouldn’t surprise me that some stupid prosecutors would order the cops to arrest the man who just saved a cop.
Definitely missing pieces to this story. Hopefully they will be filled in soon.
The Obama/Sharpton/Ferguson/BLM legacy continues.
No carry permit needed in AZ thankfully.
One less BLM member?
Once upon a time, the person that posted a story had an interest in the story and wished to reveal his insights and start the conversation.
Lately NOONE seems to do that merely seeing how quickly they can get the story up.
He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.
My insight?
I’m glad the trooper is alive.
KTLA seriously needs an editor to proof postings! That one is seriously messed up and confusing. I think my 9-year old could have written a better article.
Don’t need a carry permit in Arizona as long as the sidearm isn’t concealed.
The 2A, the best friend a beat cop ever had.
Armed citizens are a BIG net plus for society. Putting obstacles in their way gets people killed and property ruined/stolen.
You wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of the reporter, now, would you?
I was under the impression Arizona no longer required a permit for Concealed Carry.
The state does not have open carry does it? So, that means that if it doesn’t and you are packing, you have to have a permit, right?
Notice RACE not mentioned?
Shoddy reporting or ??

Prayers for the recovery of this officer and a prayer of gratitude for the passer by

PHOENIX (AP) An attacker who shot an Arizona state trooper in a roadside ambush Thursday was himself fatally shot by a passing driver while he was bashing the officers head on the pavement.
The trooper suffered a severe wound to his shoulder and upper chest but he is expected to recover at a hospital.
My trooper would not be alive without his assistance, Department of Public Safety Director Ralph Milstead said of the good Samaritan who stopped.
The drama unfolded at an early morning rollover wreck near the town of Tonopah, on Interstate 10 in the desert west of Phoenix. In that crash, a woman was ejected and killed. She was believed to have been the passenger, and the man who shot the trooper is thought to have been driving.
Responding to a drivers report of gunfire near the highway, the trooper spotted the wreck and stopped, Milstead and DPS Capt. Damon Cecil said. While he was putting out flares, the suspect opened fire and then physically attacked the wounded trooper, Milstead said. Both Milstead and Cecil said the trooper was ambushed.
The man was on top of the officer and getting the better of him, slamming the troopers head against the pavement, Milstead said. Thats when the passing driver showed up and asked if the trooper needed help.
He said yes, and the passer-by went back to his vehicle, got his gun and told the suspect to stop the attack, Milstead said. When he didnt, the driver shot him.
Investigators were trying to determine how the rollover happened and whether the suspect was involved with the initial report of gunshots, officials said. Investigators plan to speak with the person who made that call.
Milstead said he feared the worst when he headed to the hospital to check on the wounded trooper.
Hes incredibly fortunate to be here with us today, the director said.
