JANUARY 1, 1978

Director and songwriter Joseph Brooks had one truly successful movie in the Seventies, originally titled “Sessions,” but renamed after its title song. Didi Conn was dreadfully miscast as a perky little singer who thinks nothing of bedding a stranger on the eve of her wedding. Brooks ran a casting couch for his movies, preferring his women a bit too young. He was indicted in 2009 and killed himself in 2011 rather than face trial and imprisonment.

Pat Boone’s daughter got her one huge hit out of this number.

Billy had worked piano bars in relative obscurity when he hit the jackpot in 1973 with a song about his experience at a bar whose customers were a variety of losers. In his later career, at live concerts Billy would just sit back and let the crowd sing the chorus without him. “Piano Man” was to become one of the great anthems of the Seventies.

But Billy was just getting started. After a short fallow period, he recorded a series of hits that took him through the Eighties. This ended up as the theme of “Bosom Buddies,” which brought Tom Hanks to the attention of the entertainment world.
