JANUARY 1, 1959
Jerome Kern, a songwriter of the Great American Songbook, along with lyricist Dorothy Fields, wrote this tune for the musical Roberta, which was turned into a movie in 1935 with Irene Dunne singing this heartbreaker.
Producer Buck Ram slowed it down but kept the 2/2 time signature to create the perfect song for really, really slow dancing. Tony Williams performed vocal honors.

Are we going to have Jerome Kern this weekend? I LOVE him!
My favorite “story” about Jerome Kern is that he wrote all of the music for “Showboat” BEFORE he received the lyrics.
A truly masterful feat.

American, British, and German troops all loved “Lili Marlene” by Lale Andersen.

No, this weekend I'm doing songs that were on the charts on January 1, starting with 1959 and ending with 1990.
After Cole Porter and George Gershwin, I'll get to Kern in my Great American Songbook series.

That IS one of my very favorites!
Funny thing...my record always stuck at a certain point in the second verse, and I still can’t listen to it without expecting that to happen. LOL!

I located a source for the top ten songs of each year since the war years, and I'm looking at that for next year's New Years project.
I'll stop somewhere in the Nineties because the music got dark and nasty after that. Two years ago, when I did the Top 10 songs of 2014, I caught absolute holy hell for posting that kind of material to FR.

“Life’s Railway to Heaven” was my Father’s favorite song. I think he preferred the Johnny Cash version.
