Uber pulled its self-driving cars off San Franciscos streets Wednesday after the states Department of Motor Vehicles revoked their registrations, effectively ending the companys controversial pilot program after just one week.
The move marked a dramatic end to Ubers standoff with state regulators over the San Francisco-based companys insistence that it did not need a permit to test its self-driving cars, even though the state said it did and other companies testing such cars have complied. Its not clear when or under what conditions self-driving Ubers might return to Californias roads.

IST VERBOTTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take a bus. The last thing I want is to see no one in the car next to me. No way can I judge what he will do.
Compared to traditional taxi service, I LOVE Uber and its competitor Lyft.
But I have serious misgivings about driverless cars. There are too many variables for computers to account for such as potholes or heavy rain or ice. It’s damn scary to have no person behind the wheel.
Driverless streetcars on tracks are fine.
Some form of permit is required to operate virtually every motorized vehicle on public roads in all 57 states. What makes these morons think their driverless vehicles would be exempt?
No Johnnycab for you!
Love, Quaid
How about if it declares itself a Sanctuary City? You can ignore all the laws and regulations then, right?
Heh. That hypocrisy was not lost upon me (obvious to most everyone here).
The legal question for these self-driving vehicles is whether they meet the motor vehicle statutes in any given state. Most states legally require a car to be operated by a driver, so there are some legal changes that have to be made for these things to operate.
CA’s DMV should pull the driver licenses of Uber’s entire BOD. Driving is a privilege. Abuse it and lose it!
Liberal nutcase insanity. It always starts in California...a state run by these nutcases.
So called driverless cars should be illegal everywhere.
Period.
It’s a ridiculous concept.
I am all for technology making our lives more fulfilling. But not this way.
I am not too enthusiastic about driver assist either.
It just invites lazy attitudes.
Driving a 2000 pound chunk of steel and aluminum is serious business and no machine can take the place of a human.
It all flows downhill....
