Toll gates at the Big Apples bridges and tunnels will disappear next year as a cashless system is rolled out, Gov. Cuomo announced Wednesday. The new system will be set up beginning in January at the Queens-Midtown and Hugh Carey tunnels, and then throughout the year at the Rockaway, RFK, Verrazano-Narrows, Throgs Neck and Bronx-Whitestone bridges. The system will collect money from drivers using E-ZPass. Those without E-ZPass will get their license plates recorded and receive a bill within 30 days. They will have 30 days to pay. All license plates will be scanned and scofflaws will be ticketed immediately. Toll collectors will be reassigned to work with state police in enforcing the ticketing. Todays development is strong and long overdue, Cuomo said about the effort to speed up traffic and boost security. Why are you still pulling up to a tollbooth, stopping the car, handing your money to a person who puts it in a drawer, makes change and hands it back to you? he said.

“You are in for a surprise”
I am if I ever intend on going there again. NYC isn’t part of America.
Last time I went there I was followed by people, cameras following me and stuff. I had a shemagh and a backpack.
Status Cuomo wants to do his part usher in Big Brother. Or maybe he wants to BE Big Brother.
I can't find anything wrong with this approach. It eliminates a bottleneck in the road, and I'm sure there are major safety benefits as well.
I don’t like it.
I hate Sleazy-Pass.
How does the system handle rental cars???
You can avoid most tolls in FL except for the Turnpike. The only problem is they let police and buses on the toll roads. I pay good money to speed!
Michael always said “Sonny should have used EZ Pass.”
Very annoying for out of state drivers .
Toll Roads across America. Be like a new national lottery.
No SunPass? Your tag is photographed, and you are sent a $3.00 charge. (With a $6 "processing fee", paid to someplace in Georgia).
U R correct. But for Manhattan it will be for going South of 96th Street. That was Bloomie’s dream. The other thing is toll increases will be easier as you won’t be physically putting more mobey in the collector’s hand. Remove the act of paying and you lessen the resentment when the price goes up. Like medical insurance and Pell Grants make rising medical and tuition costs less overt.
EZ-Pass is awesome. Embrace the Borg.
Just curious - are you two related?
Good question. Here’s what the website says but seems you need the ez pass tag to be displayed as opposed to reading a license plate. I guess maybe rentals have ez pass tags up there, I don’t know.
Q. Should I add my rental car information to my E-ZPass account?
A. Do not add rental car information to your E-ZPass account. However, you can use your E-ZPass Tag in any vehicle of the same class. Please ensure that your E-ZPass Tag is properly mounted as per installation instructions in all vehicles in which the Tag is used. A Tag that is not mounted properly may prevent the Tag from being read in the lane. If your Tag does not read, you will be subject to the terms of your car rental agreement that apply to E-ZPass usage, toll transactions and/or violation transactions.
You will not get a bill 30 days later. In 60 days you will get a bill for the toll and a $35.00 late charge EZ PASS is a huge ripoff, much like the red light cameras.
Most rentals companies will do this. Or, at least for the Dallas area toll companies, you can give them a call and tell them you’re in a rental/what your rental license is. Then they’ll send the toll charges to you instead of the rental company who’ll triple them and pass it on
It’s the same process as a fine, so it looks like a fine to me. Assessed and charged by the government and all.
Ding, Ding, Ding. Great line of thinking. What will the rental car companies do to pass the cost along?
If it’s like Florida it’s included in the price already.
