Toll gates at the Big Apples bridges and tunnels will disappear next year as a cashless system is rolled out, Gov. Cuomo announced Wednesday. The new system will be set up beginning in January at the Queens-Midtown and Hugh Carey tunnels, and then throughout the year at the Rockaway, RFK, Verrazano-Narrows, Throgs Neck and Bronx-Whitestone bridges. The system will collect money from drivers using E-ZPass. Those without E-ZPass will get their license plates recorded and receive a bill within 30 days. They will have 30 days to pay. All license plates will be scanned and scofflaws will be ticketed immediately. Toll collectors will be reassigned to work with state police in enforcing the ticketing. Todays development is strong and long overdue, Cuomo said about the effort to speed up traffic and boost security. Why are you still pulling up to a tollbooth, stopping the car, handing your money to a person who puts it in a drawer, makes change and hands it back to you? he said.

Unions won’t like this.
Sonny wouldn’t have gotten gunned down if this had happened earlier!
Oh, great. I have E-Z pass but I think of visitors and poor folks who don’t. But then NYC, that democratic stronghold I call my beloved home, doesn’t much care for poor people much...
Didn’t a toll collector spot a suspicious vehicle once and avert a disaster?
The article doesn’t mention it, but this system is already in place on the Henry Hudson Bridge. Workers started removing the tollboths in early December, and yesterday when I breezed through they were completely gone.

You don’t need E-Z pass as they will send you a bill based upon License plate.
They did this in Massachusetts a few months ago. Eventually the whole nation will do away with tollbooths. But not tolls! Expect every highway in the nation to electronically charge for usage.
Not to mention the fact that government will have detailed records of where your car has been and when..
Beat me to it.
That’s a fine, not a bill.
If it is like the toll road in Orange county the fines fir not paying can reach several thousand quickly.
That’s a great deal for folks in rental cars.

Rentals will back charge your credit card you used when you

“Rentals will back charge your credit card you used when you

As if I needed another reason to avoid NYC.
I can see the black market in altered license plates already springing up.

Every time I hear “RFK Bridge” and “Hugh Carey Tunnel,” it’s like nails on a chalkboard.
TRIBOROGH Bridge, and BROOKLYN BATTERY Tunnel.
There. I feel better now.
