This 1937 recording from Paris features Stephane Grappelli on violin with Django doing his jazzy best on guitar. The approach is straight blues.

Just one of those little weird factoids of my life! LOL!

This 1948 recording takes a different approach. It’s neither operatic nor a light dance band number. There are elements of the Big Band approach, but Jo’s voice soars above them.

Evidently the NYC chapter of the Nelson Eddy Fan Club was an “Opera” fan club as well.

Back in the days before VCRs, my Dad would get 16mm projectors and turn our living room into a movie theater. We saw all the Eddy movies. My favorite was “Balalaika” with Ilona Massey. It had a recreation of the famous WW1 “Silent Night Truce”.

The First Lady of Song traversed the Cole Porter songbook in 1956, and this recording has her backed by Buddy Bregman. It’s a dance band arrangement, and Ella’s voice is perfect.

DION & THE BELMONTS: “IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT”

Ask any Baby Boomer about this song, and he’ll say, “Didn’t those guys from the Bronx record this back in ‘60?” Dion DiMucci’s first love was the blues, but in his early doo-wop days he and his group worked in a number of styles. They put a good Fifties dance floor finish on the tune. Right after this, Dion left the group and went solo.

What makes a song successful is its ability to transcend genres. This video from Perry’s 1961 TV show on NBC is dark and moody, quite different from previous versions. The production is a bit overblown, but the song isn’t lost in it.

Rosemary tackled the Great American Songbook in the Eighties, and her Cole Porter work comes from 1982. This is a totally different approach, an up-tempo small jazz club arrangement that is a throwback to the Fifties. The solos from her sidemen in the middle are killers.
