One of the chief concerns of President-elect Donald Trump's detractors during the presidential campaign was that the brash and notoriously loose-lipped real estate executive wouldn't be able to handle the delicate balancing act that is diplomacy. It's one thing to make wild claims domestically; it's another to inflame a fellow world power with a careless word or two.
Today, a fellow world power China is inflamed.
And Trump's controversial conversation with Taiwan's leader, which broke nearly four decades of protocol when it comes to U.S.-China relations, harks back to another controversial bit of diplomacy: Trump's first big foreign visit as the Republican nominee to Mexico.
That visit erupted into a major political problem for Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, and by the end of it, the two sides were offering different versions of what had happened. Similarly, Trump and Taiwan seem to be at-odds about precisely what just occurred.
Back in August, Trump claimed after a meeting with Peña Nieto that the they hadn't discussed Trump's plan to somehow force Mexico to pay for his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Peña Nieto and his staff quickly differed with that account, saying he had told Trump that Mexico wouldn't pay for the wall.
Fears only to ill educated marshmallow majors.
All of the above is true. But the WaPo will continue so long as it’s referenced and read. FReepers really shouldn’t quote and post WaPo drivel.
Yep. Fake news.
Didn’t Barack say in 2008 that he’d speak with any country without precondition, and didn’t the white liberals applaud that pledge?
This was a brilliant move. Trump hit China on one of its great vulnerabilities without ever even hinting military action. Now the Chinese have to figure out how to respond, possibly with a concession we need, like on the military islands they’re building in the South China Sea. Trump’s a master bargainer, and he’s already bargaining for the U.S.
If Hillary had spoken with Taiwan it would be indicative of her great diplomatic skill honed during her glorious stint as secretary of state.
That’d be great.
I have felt that all that would take is for us to simply recognize Taiwan and do things like Trump did yesterday.
Trump did it!
I agree with you.
“I wonder who it is that has those fears.”

I bet the WaCompost has a safe space with crayons, play-doh and therapists.
Fake news. Nothing more.
China needs some inflammation, they have been acting like they want a war in the South China Sea and they have been successfully capturing our industries while Sodom on the Potomac has done nothing to defend us because the payoff is too rich.
God I hate the quisling far-left.
The only real value of posting things from there, is allowing newbies to see it ripped the shreds in short order.
Where oh where was all their concern when Obama, Hillary, Kerry, and company were making friends with our enemies, making our friends mad, and generally trashing foreign policy?
good move for DJT to have spoken with the President of ROC!
WashPost is so far OUT of it with its leftist prejudices...its gonna have a heart attack in the next few months (tee hee hee)!
The way the MSM and the ‘elites’ report the news reminds me of the apocryphal story of a series of 10 races between an American car, and one built in the USSR.
The American car won eight races and the Soviet car won two races. The Soviet press reported that the Soviet car twice finished first and finished second in the other eight races. They also reported that the American car twice finished last and finished second last, the other eight times. Of course the number of cars in the race was not mentioned. This is now how the MSM reports on DJT.
To Trump, diplomacy doesn’t mean bowing to tyrants or allowing them to dictate terms - they can deal like adults or stomp their slippers all they want.
The Democrats, and like fake news they have fake fears. Both contrived to drive emotions. Because they can. So are we going to put the full force of the government behind stopping news outlets that peddle fake news and fake fears? Nah, the Republicans only fry the news sites that are supportive of them, or more specifically, Trump.
Sounds more like the press is inflamed, and the Chinese are nervous.
