Scores of demonstrators were arrested on Tuesday as U.S. workers from fast-food chains staged nationwide protests for higher pay, union rights and immigration reform in their first major action since Donald Trump was elected president.

McDonald's Corp (MCD.N) restaurants in 340 cities were prime rally targets, while baggage handlers, cabin cleaners and sky caps at Chicago's O'Hare and Boston's Logan international airports planned to demonstrate in support of workers demanding starting pay of $15 per hour, organizers of the "Fight for $15" campaign said.

More than 200 protesters gathered before dawn at Zuccotti Park in New York City's Financial District, the site of a camp set up in 2011 by Occupy Wall Street demonstrators, where they banged drums and chanted slogans.

It is my understanding many teenagers are out of the job market replaced by others who now want $15 and hour. I don’t support a minimum wage, but if we had one, it should be two-tiered a lower one for HS kids.

I agree, maybe $8 for 16-23 year olds in school still.

The ones at Wawa are very good. You might be surprised at how easy it is to customize a sandwich, for example.

All of them about priced me out. I have a set price I will pay. If it is over that, they want it more than I do. They get to keep it.

First REAL job was as pinsetter in bowling alley,

Only automation was foot treadle on deck that raised the ‘spikes’ to set the pins on.

Worked double alley, double shift while going to school and was 14 at the time.
Pay was about 6 bucks a night 30 bucks a week plus weekends more plus better tips... my father probably wasn’t making a whole lot more.

I did manage to put a derelict or two out of work though.

Had to sign up for SS AFTER I caught a pin in the ‘running lights’... EVERYBODY was scared —itless as I was so young.

I’m eating a gyro wrap, fries and sofa now. $11.50

Buffets went from $7.99 to $13.99.

T-shirts went from $5 to $16.

Beef ribs went from 79¢ to $2.99 a pound in grocery stores.
Chicken went from 39¢ four years ago to $1.99 a pound.

Fees on your home phone, water, gas, electric and garbage are tripled in the last 6 years.

Now that Trump’s won, they should scale back their expectations.

The immigrants should go back where they came from if they can’t cut it here. They need an education before they deserve more pay.

First of all "minimum wage" - so called - was never meant to raise a family on. It was a starter job mostly for teens so they could learn the basics of just showing up for work on-time, how to get along with co-workers and their superiors.

Second, I USED to go to a McDonalds for early coffee and some mornings there would be a crowd of older folks standing at the door. When asked why they were not open 20 min past the posted opening hour they laugh and say the "English Interpreter has not yet shown up" .

Third, you do realize that not a one of these employees could count back change to you if the "computer register" did not show how much was due back!!! And if you really want to drive them crazy when the total comes to $4.07, offer them $5 and a quarter.

LOL

I agree.

It is funny to watch a person become perplexed because you handed them $5.17 for a $4.17 bill.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Making change is so easy. I agree with your take though.

I’ve got to get out more. LOL

They’ll try to say so, but in fact Otoken is still in office for several weeks. The civil unrest on the Great Unifier’s watch has surpassed anything I remember during Bush II’s reign...

How come no prominent conservatives or elected Republicans ever bother to mention that cities and states controlled by Democrats for years already have the power to raise the minimum-wage? How come they are not educating people about the dangers of the minimum-wage? Even the NY Times in 1987 wrote an op-ed saying the minimum-wage should be zero.

Most teens these days are too busy being toted from one class or activity to another to be bothered with a job. It’s a shame, because kids would learn more at a job than they do in their classrooms with leftist teachers. Too many parents do not make their kids grow up. No wonder so many college students are aimless, whiny, spoiled brats.
