A Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer has been towed back into port just two days after it sailed following a total propulsion failure while taking part in Nato exercises.

The Daring class warship, HMS Duncan, left Devonport naval base at Plymouth on Sunday take part in a series of maritime wargames with Spanish, Portuguese and German warships.

But the 4,500 tonne hi-tech ship limped back into Plymouth on Wednesday under tow and shadowed by three additional dockyard tugs as well as the Ministry of Defence police.

Royal Navy surface warfare tactics, circa 2018 (after Harpoon anti-ship missiles are retired):

1) Form battle line (assuming ships can maintain power)

2) Engage with deck gun

3) Maneuver to suck enemy into CIWS range; engage with anti-missile guns

4) Distribute small arms and cutlasses

5) Prepare to board!

6) Employ damage control and abandon ship procedures

Stand by for the same kind of issues with our Zumwalt class.

You did see the story about the Zumwalt being towed into a Chinese controlled port for emergency repairs, didn't you?

“All six Type 45s, which are based at Portsmouth, are fitted with a revolutionary integrated electrical propulsion system which drives the ship with “clean” power. “

I hope it’s some consolation to the Brits to know even in defeat they are “saving” the planet.

I used to fight this at NTP (Navy Training Plan) conferences all the time. It is imperative that users/operators be smarter than the system. This is from the perspective of 30+ years active duty.

>>Additionally to many desk warriors did not realize you can’t use smart machines and dumb operators.

Smart machines do allow you to use dumb operators to a point. But it requires you to use very smart technicians and that’s the problem. The US Navy gives the best technical training of all the armed forces but the requirements to maintain modern automation has a certain amount of experience required in addition to training. I hire ex-Navy techs most of the time but the ones who are straight out of the service can’t keep up. They need a couple years of running at the speed of a factory to be really useful as good controls techs.

These ships are the same. By the time you get a good seasoned tech, you gotta let them go and replace them with a new A school grad. Back when I was an EM1(SS), the equipment was dumb enough that an A school grad could keep up with the demands of the machines.

I was hoping this was a trial run but it was supposed to rendezvous with an international flotilla for war games. This should have been worked out during trial runs. Imagine having to deploy for hostilities in this vessel, what are they thinking?

Oh wait, we have an Obama so never mind.

Sometime in the ‘80s I was sitting on the beach at Virginia’s First Landing State Park...

Every year we spend a few days at Fort Story which is right next to where you stayed. We were driving the road running along side the beach when I looked left and saw The USS Harry Truman, CVN-75 which was returning from a deployment. I pulled in where there is a lookout over the beach and got a few fine photos of that great warship.

From a Norton Commando owner

I owned a 750 Commando back in 1977. Probably the funnest bike I ever owned. I got so used to the reversed shifter, brake pedal, etc. that I had a hard time getting used to the Honda I bought as a replacement.

I still wish I had never sold that Norton.

It has nothing to do with the make of the fridge.
UK fridges are just too small, so the Ale has to be kept in the Cupboard.
