Americans talk about democracy like its sacred. In public discourse, the more democratic American government is, the better. The people are supposed to rule.
But thats not the premise that underlies Americas political system. Most of the men who founded the United States feared unfettered majority rule. James Madison wrote in Federalist 10 that systems of government based upon pure democracy
have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property. John Adams wrote in 1814 that, Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself.

It was designed to stop Hillaries...
No, it was meant to stop large population areas from dominating the entire country. And it works just as it was intended.
Wrong. It’s supposed to stop pervert criminals like Hillary from becoming president.
LOL!
it was meant to stop states like NY and California from imposing unpopular cheating frauds like Hillary on the entire nation
I think it was the other way around. It did what it was supposed to do.
It was designed to give all the states a say in who became President and to insure that high population states did not dominate the government. Exactly as it did this past election.
This actually is Fake News
Why do these liberals feel the need to drop their pants, squat and crap in public?
It’s gross and unsanitary, but like this author they do it anyway.
Peter Beinhart is wrong! Again, but that’s a long, long story. The electoral college was NOT designed to stop any individual who is constitutionally eligible from being elected. It was designed to ensure that the states all have a say in electing the president and not just large population centers. Period.
This tool uses the word “democratic” 25 times in his article.
He say it like he understands it, but he doesn’t: We live in a Republic, not a Democracy.
In actuality, the Electoral College was meant to protect us from a candidate like Hillary Clinton.
Exactly.
...and NONE of it works if citizenship is rendered moot!!!!
Correct. The Founding Fathers strongly feared demagoguery from the cities, and put in the Electoral College to stop that type of mob rule.
Silly liberals. American democracy was invented to stop people like the Clintons from using their existing political power to create corrupt, perpetual dynasties. Turns out it worked pretty well. :)
It addresses how Obama got elected...when the gimmees outnumber the workers.
Tells intent of the Electoral College
Discusses lack of a check on the Supreme Court
I believe you can read it on line via google books.
yikes....nothing in the article addresses\proves the headline.
The article is injected with the writer’s own fearful opinions about a Trump presidency.
Peter entirely misstates the real purpose of the Electoral College and translates that something I’d only conclude is a woefully inept comparison (either accidental or on purpose).
Popular vote is MOB RULE, make no bones about that. And the electoral college assures that each and EVERY state of these UNITED STATES in this Union have their fair say. To do otherwise would submit this country to the whims of a few INFESTATIONS of highly populated areas of closed-minded and irrational selfish people.
The electoral college isn’t a fantasy; it is clearly defined in the US Constitution which also dictates how it is to function. To do away with it is the equivalent of denying the Constitution itself.
IOW, horseshit, Peter.
It was meant to stop criminals like the democrat party from stuffing ballot boxes to win a national population vote and it did!
wow people will sit down in a dr’s office and read this out of the atlantic and feel like they are ‘informed’. I can see what they’re doing here. They’re trying to paint that the Electoral College Doesn’t work.
That’s exactly right. And, also, as a check on pure democracy which they, rightly, mistrusted.
