Trump victory gives impetus to California secession movement

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Donald Trump’s election as president is giving a big social-media boost to an unlikely effort in the nation’s most populous state: a plan to vote on seceding from the union.

The Yes California Independence Campaign hopes to put a question on the November 2018 ballot that would authorize a statewide independence vote for the spring of 2019.

The effort drew little attention until Tuesday’s election, which also kept Trump’s fellow Republicans in charge of Congress and raised the possibility of a conservative shift on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Any effort to get an issue on the ballot requires the gathering of hundreds of thousands of signatures.

Sounds good.

Trump pulled it out less than 48 hours ago, and now FReepers are actually thrilled to parcel off states.

That’s one of the worst examples I’ve seen for trying to rip defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Why no publicity on the inland regions of Cali that want to escape the rest of the state? That should be included.

I hope they do it. . .
then we can invade, defeat the rebels, try them, execute them, confiscate their property, and make California great again.

I most violently object to your premise, which presumes that the least desirable population areas wish to secede, whereas the reverse is the case.

The most entitled populations are are the least productive in the terms that matter to people.

If only we could isolate the metropolitan Los Angeles area, the metropolitan San Francisco area, the immediate Silicon Valley area, and the immediate Sacramento area. The existing Capital can be moved to the diseased-ridden City and County of San Francisco.

BUT...

The delusional large population centers can find their own damned water, and their own vegetables, since they deliberately are destroying what once was the most productive large agricultural valley in the United States, if not the entire world.

They would not be, even briefly, missed!

I'll concede that inch off the map, a land built mostly on trash and liberal fantasies, surrounded by one of the world's greatest natural moats and likely so contaminated from their homeless nirvana and homosexual population as to be uninhabitable for generations to come.

Why? Because they will destroy themselves with their hubris. I don't view it as surrendering, I view it as loaning long enough for them to self destruct as an example to other moronic liberal utopias.

Those *ssholes. Now we'll have to build two walls.

As I said on a different thread, it would not end well. What is the flight time for a Minuteman III from Minot to Sacramento (or Silicon Valley) anyway?

1) If the US is not a party to the lawsuit, don’t they lose by not showing up to court?
2) Guns and cannons and industrial might 150 years ago don’t solve a question of freedom and law, in the West
3) The Pledge was written by a Socialist
14th Amendment - People can renounce citizenship. I don’t see the relevance.

There’s no explicit Constitutional provision against it. It defies logic that a territory can vote to join a union, but, upon entering, can never ever leave.

No way that the Founders would disallow secession, given they themselves seceded from The King.

Painful as it is, secession is a human right.

Cut them loose, we won’t miss their lunatic Senators, Congresscritters and their 55 Democrat electoral votes. But first we have to move FreeRepublic to a free state.

Relax. Free Republic is and must remain a portion of any future state. No moving vans required.

If the GOP were smart they would use this to their advantage. There is no reason to secede if more power is pushed back to the states. Then they can govern as they please. Take this craziness and use it to advance the principles of limited government.

Much of San Francisco on the north side is land fill. They think they’ve got that under control, but I seriously doubt it will stand the test of a 9+ quake.

Two words for them... gurgle gurgle...

Wouldn’t catch me spending much time in that area. No way would I live there.

If the movement were to catch on here, I would hope folks didn’t go for it. Who knows. We have a lot of very strange folks in state.

It’s like someone put out an add in all the eastern papers.

Nut Jobs Wanted

Not trying to say we didn’t grow our own too, but California has always attracted some questionable characters.

It is currently domiciled in Commiefornia. If they go independent or back to Mexico, we need FreeRepublic to be moved out.

Secession is not a human right. The decision to leave is lawful. But you can not separate the states that are part of the union. You also cannot rescind your citizenship and remain in the US unless you qualify for certain visas. And those have limitations.

By withdrawing from the Union, a state would effectively be denying someone who is a citizen of the United States their rights except by due process. The key there is “due process” and in this case, the state would need to find a LEGALLY RECOGNIZED way to withdraw. This would either be some kind of legislation passed in Congress or an Amendment to the Constitution. Anything less will ensure a civil war and no state will win such a war.

Off the top of my head, the Ninth Amendment comes to mind, if memory serves me...
Possibly also the enumerated rights reserved to the states, like the definition of citizenship.
Also the absolute right to decide the form and conditions of voting, including the right to require voter ID, the Constitutional citations not changed by amendment I have not memorized...

You have an embarrassingly ignorant grasp of the state of California, and its generations old hostility among easily identified regions...

Care to have an adult debate about California History?

I am aware that the northern counties want to break away.
The inland agricultural areas are also unhappy.
None of the suggestions of breaking up California into separate states have ever gone anywhere and I suspect that this suggestion of seceding as a whole is just hot air as well.

California is spending itself into oblivion and at some point will become insolvent. I don’t want to have to bail them out.
