At the risk of getting repetitive, fewer viewers tuned into a primetime NFL game.
The Week 7 Bears/Packers Thursday Night Football game earned 14.2 million viewers on CBS and NFL Network Thursday night, down 17% from Seahawks/49ers last year (17.1M) and down 12% from Jets/Patriots in 2014 (16.1M). Ratings were not immediately available.
The Packers win earned the fourth-smallest audience for a Thursday Night Football simulcast on CBS (22 telecasts). Three of the five smallest audiences have come in the past three weeks, with 49ers/Cardinals in Week 4 ranking second (12.1M) and Broncos/Chargers in Week 5 fifth (14.5M).
The game was also the fifth of six TNF games this season to decline from last year, with each of those five hitting multi-year lows.
Despite the decline, TNF about doubled competing coverage of the MLB National League Championship Series on Fox Sports 1 (7.2M).
In adults 18-49, Bears/Packers had a 4.5 rating down 24% from last year (5.9) and down 17% from 2014 (5.4M).
Awesome !!!
I’m in on the boycott! Other than the opening game for the Bucs, I’ve not watched a moment of the NFL. Even had the sports bar I was in yesterday, turn on a cooking show rather than the NFL on one of their TV’s.
Off the topic....what is the point of having play start at the 25yd line instead of 20?
According to news reports, the 49er’s are 1-7 this morning. More good news !!!
Although I am a Cowboys fan for the last 39 years, and Jerry Jones did say all the right things about Colin, I still am glad to see the NFL getting it’s just desserts.
They don't want the snowflakes running back kick offs any more - they might get hurt ...
Who wants to watch 2.5 hours of talking heads and commercials? 2 hours of Redzone takes care of highlights and scores for me.
I know I’m Dixie Chicking the nfl.
To hell with em.
I think the lower numbers are because fans are not watching games their favorite team is not playing in. I have been watching the Steelers myself, but I did not even watch them this weekend. I used to watch the Sunday and Monday night games no matter who was playing, but no more.
It’s boring anyway.
Many reasons I can think of for the decline:
The match ups in prime time have, by and large, been awful. Who wants to watch two losing teams play each other.
The disrespect toward the National Anthem.
The constant interruptions in the game due to questionable penalties and call reviews.
The length of the games and the incessant bombarding of ads is over the top. Games run for about four hours. The clock runs for one hour. Yet the time where there is actual action is only about 11 minutes! If you have to watch, DVR it and spend 11 minutes watching it rather than wasting four hours.
The NFL has gotten so greedy. The axiom “pigs get fat, but hogs get slaughtered” is becoming applicable.
Some cite the brutality and injuries stemming from the game, but it’s always been like that, so I’m not sure. It is certain that due to the potential for serious injury, many parents are wary of having their kids involved, opting for soccer or other sports without the extreme contact.
Watched Sea//AZ but turned off the volume. It’s the female sideline reporters following up one stupid question with another. Commercials showing big dumb whitey being outsmarted by a black. What’s a catch?(again)
yep, they were up 14-0 early, lost the lead and ended up losing pretty convincingly.
The ritual war has been taken over by Lawyers inserting nonsense to cop a fee
Give us the war and get rid of the lawyers
“I have been watching the Steelers myself, but I did not even watch them this weekend”
You didn’t miss much. : )
Very good!
Love it. Let it die.
Boring?
How can you call a 6-6 overtime tie boring....?
(What a pathetic display of ineptitude - keep this up and they may lose market share to "Bowling for Dollars")
That's exactly how to punish the NFL. If you HAVE to watch a game ONLY watch your team. Try to watch it with groups so the number of tvs is lower or at a bar. That way the ratings starts to resemble baseball's crappy ratings. Hahahahah. Perfect. I watch only parts of my teams game and then bail.
