Hurricane Matthew Live Thread II
NOAA/NHC ^ | October 6 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/06/2016 4:10:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

The upper part of the low decoupled and went north. That is what is causing the rain up here. The lower level circulation is still off the NC coast.

Update from Columbus County,NC - power is still out, I’m posting on my Fire tablet using a Verizon cellular connection. We had two people drown here in my area when their car was swept into deep water, and our local downtown is flooded. I’m staying with a friend in town because my farm home is in a low-lying area and vulnerable to flooding. I’m not looking forward to seeing whether I’ll be able to stay there tonight.

I need to sign off now to save my battery. Will try to check back in later today after I’ve had a chance to get out and take a look around. Thanks, Caww for all the pics!

Seems the bad effects went further left of the forecast track than expected for North Carolina and Virginia. Which is why authorities call for evacuations in the cone - and even further outside the cone.

Matthew was potentially a pretty equivalent system in overall intensity to Donna - it was below 940 mb in the northern Bahamas whereas Donna was 930 at landfall in Florida. Had Matthew tracked to the left side of the cone instead of the right, things would have been far worse. Add in a timely eyewall replacement and a timely wobble to the right, and we got lucky. Sane people don't count on luck to avoid getting drowned by hurricanes, and only pinheads thump their chests when their guesswork ends up being the actual because of such luck. The threat of serious flooding in Carolina was downplayed by some, and it came to pass and is still getting worse as rivers drain towards the coast.

So is this it for the hurricane? No looping back and hitting Florida again?

We've had some soaking (much needed) rains here in CT with a bit of a breeze kicking up the autumn leaves. I think this was the remnants of the much ballyhooed hurricane.

Of course, I can't say here that the hurricane was over-hyped. Or some Freeper will respond and yell at me that his brother's basement got flooded and tree branches are all over his yard.

I am in Missouri so the hurricane does not affect me. However, what you are missing is the amounts of rain that fell has millions affected from Florida up to where you are. NOT to mention the sheer hell many Haitians are living day in and day out. Millions across these states are without power. Many are those who fled the coast only to find themselves flooded and being rescued in what was to be safe places. Enjoy your moisture but try to have a modicum of compassion for those that won't have a home for some period of time...

The over-hype was the projected tract this hurricane was to take. Hilton Head is a mess.. even the rich got whacked!!!

I knew it - only a matter of time.

Over-hyped does not mean nobody suffered.

Of course, if I lost my power, then this storm would have been an utter catastrophe.

‘You know’ there is a reason why North Easterners have a reputation... Having your home flooded is a bit beyond losing power. Do a little homework about what really happened before you sound off.

I knew it - only a matter of time before the self-righteous folk come storming in with indignation because some people got flooded and I dared, DARED, to buck the politically correct line by saying that the storm was not as bad as forecasted.

For one, I'm happy that the hurricane was mostly a bust. It would have been catastrophic to have millions of people with destroyed homes down in Florida.

Seriously... the dollar amount and dead recovered has not yet been totaled and you have the .alls to call me self-righteous? Again the ‘over-hype’ was this storm was to take a ‘right’ turn out to sea. There was NO hype about the amount of rain that would accompany this ‘tiny’ storm. I have watched nothing else, but the climate changers go to channel, the ‘weather channel’ since they started covering it ‘live’. Else I would NOT have bothered to respond to your half baked remarks.

I’m sure that we Northeasterners have a VERY good reputation.

Want to take a poll out here in ‘fly-over’ country?

I'm just happy the storm was not as bad as made out to be. Millions of people in harms way escaped. Also, the liberals had their "global warming" talking points taken away.

Hurricanes have always been with us. It's good to see that this storm was not as bad as made out to be.

Trust you remained safe though likely very water logged in your area as we saw in photos.

When I first began looking for photos I was astounded, as I went, the degree of flood waters happening......It didn’t help the area was already water saturated from so much rain from the bands hoovering so long.

Nope——and why do you suppose you are called “flyover country”?
