Kaine: 'For Me, the Hardest Struggle in My Faith Life Was...Death Penalty'

Putting convicted criminals to death is an issue Sen. Tim Kaine said he had to “grapple” with when he served as governor of Virginia. Kaine chose the death penalty, not abortion, as the issue that posed the biggest conflict with his Roman Catholic faith.

“For me, the hardest struggle in my faith life was, the Catholic Church is against the death penalty and so am I,” Kaine said at Tuesday night’s debate. “But I was governor of a state, and the state law said that there was a death penalty for crimes if the jury determined them to be heinous. And so I had to grapple with that.” …

This is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says about the death penalty:

Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.

If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.

Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically nonexistent."

Note that it never condemns the death penalty in an absolute way; it simply states that, generally, there are better options available, which should be used if possible.

On the other hand, this is what it says about abortion:

Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.

Mr. Kaine is not communicating Church teaching accurately.

The hardest struggle in his faith life was to keep up the appearance of having faith.

While Kaine talked about being devoted to his "religion". Pence spoke of his relationship with Christ. Pence is a Christian. Kaine and many (not all) Catholics like him, doesn't have a clue.

Christian Bishops of all denominations should excommunicate all those who profess to be Christian but support, defend and enable abortion, homosexuality or other vile sins. The majority of Church leaders (Bishops) need to clean house but like our government they're unwilling to do it.

Seems to be that if you go to the Bible, there is justification for capital crimes haveing a death penalty. Anyhow, I can see no justification for abortion. It not as if there wasn’t infanticide at the time in Mediterranean cultures. However, you are not to kill the innocent.

He supports the death penalty for millions of innocent children slaughtered without any recourse.

Figures, another CINO who spews his BS to stay in good standing with the heretic Bishops and Priests allow him to receive the Eucharist as if he were actually Catholic.

He feels sorry for murderers, but no mercy for God’s innocent children. He may be a Catholic, but he’s not a Christian.

Well, GOD was the one who instituted the death penalty.

It was HIS idea.

But leave it to a dem to kill the innocent and let the guilty live.

Kaine embraced Satan. He LOVES killing anyone—esp. babies. His “worldview” is called Nihilism.....the Culture of Death. The only reason he abhors the Death penalty, is because his satanic buddies are on Death Row.

Justice (virtue) Systems ONLY promote public virtue and to execute someone who deliberately kills other people and little children and can not be let “free” EVER, needs to be eliminated from a civil society. It is his choice and Justice——and Cain feels sorry for the baby-killers. Figures.

He has a soul sold to Satan for power/fame/money.

Beat me to it.

He has excommunicated himself by his own actions.

Tim Kaine is no Catholic.

I was yelling that during the debate. The death penalty is not against church doctrine! Abortion always most certainly is!
