The teen accused of shooting two students and a teacher at a South Carolina elementary school on Wednesday reportedly was expelled from middle school last year for showing up with a hatchet.
A family friend of the suspected shooter told WSPA the 14-year-old was being home-schooled after the hatchet incident.
The alleged shooter had no known connection to Townville Elementary, where he was eventually taken into custody. He had been

SC is pretty annoying. Alabama’s a turkey. NC has a few requirements, but nothing that takes real effort.
In Oklahoma, the state constitution gives parents complete authority. If the state decides to show up on your doorstep, your kids have to demonstration some education. We used to joke that we wished out kids would stop demonstrating their education long enough to eat their meals or use the bathroom.
Typical to with juveniles to not release the name unless a court certifies them for trial as an adult.
What’s really ironic is how my kids are STILL demonstrating their education.
All college grads with respectable GPA’s, two in grad school and one looking into it, and one pursuing her PhD in a STEM field.
:)
Thanks. I had seen the Jesse name, but couldn’t tell if it was the kid or the grandfather from the context. Didn’t want to put any more effort in at this point.
I have to notify Nevada once, when my kids reach age 7, and then again if we move. That’s it. It’s so nice. If I fail at homeschooling, I’m the one who gets stuck with a useless grown kid, after all. And I don’t have to worry about passing some common core-aligned test when our curriculum doesn’t follow their plan.
I have met a many “homeschool” families who had to homeschool because their dysfunctional brat was kicked out of public and sometimes private schools.
It is maddening.
I agree. I think when these things happen (or any crime for that matter) it should be noted the criminal attends public high school, etc.
I get a lot of push back from other Christians about it, even in my own church.
Hat tip to you for finishing it off. Almost every homeschooled student I know is 100% more articulate and thoughtful than the rest of us.
Wish my folks had homeschooled me.
Let’s be honest, you don’t need a government and a school district for accountability. Those people are the reason most of us homeschool. I don’t want them to know we exist.
We moved from Michigan (total freedom) to Maryland (”accountability”)
We searched until we found an umbrella school that is very low key and non-intrusive.
We also don’t take part in home-school co-ops as we believe them to be a crutch. Our kids are not brainiacs, well, one is and he’s studying aerospace engineering, the rest are self-supporting and good citizens, so the approach worked.
Honestly, don’t think that you need someone from the state judging your every move.
They didn’t judge whether we were doing well enough or not.
It isn’t that you are asking them permission. You are TELLING them what you are doing and the only thing they can tell you is if your curriculum does not meet NYS criteria somewhere, but they cannot tell you what to use.
I wasn't sure I entirely believed in the economic doom-n-gloom, but if he takes the full-time position he's been offered at the grocery store where he works part-time, he'll be making less per hour than I made when I started as a secretary at That Insurance Company, 27 years ago.
But dontcha know?
According to Hillary, the economy has never been better.
Or didn’t you watch the debate?
The economic doom and gloom on the jobs front stems from the scarcity of breadwinner jobs, that have sufficient pay and benefits to allow a person to be self-supporting. Those are increasingly hard to find, even in areas with job growth.
I know several families that do co-ops and it greatly limits their other opportunities to learn and teach what they want rather than what the co-op offers. Plus they are locked into the strict schedule.
