Congress Can Save the Internet
WSJ ^ | Sept. 11, 2016 | L. Gordon Crovitz

Posted on 09/29/2016 5:38:19 AM PDT by george76

The White House will end U.S. oversight at month’s end, unless lawmakers step in.

resident Obama wants this to be the last month of an open, uncensored internet guaranteed by the U.S. government. His plan to end American stewardship would hand new power to authoritarian governments offended by the internet as we know it.

The good news is it appears congressional leaders have agreed to rescue the internet in time to prevent the Sept. 30 expiration of U.S. oversight. Sen. Ted Cruz, who has pushed hard against the plan since it was announced two years ago, told me last week he’s “cautiously optimistic” legislators will block it through a rider to the federal budget: “The basic proposition of keeping the internet free has united Republicans across the spectrum and should also unite Democrats with Republicans.”

Top Senate and House Republicans have signaled they will ensure U.S. oversight continues to protect the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or Icann

...

A lot of people who have been trying to take this authority away from the U.S. want to do it for the sole purpose of cracking down on Internet freedom and limiting it and having governments protect their backsides instead of empower their people.”

What does Mrs. Clinton think?

I bet there are lots of side deals with this one. How many pallets of gold bullion are we ceding along with the internet for maintenance? We are being told NOTHING about this. All we can do is hope ‘someone’ in government is on our side. Which means this is hopeless.

This is a coup orchestrated and being carried out by the Obama administration. We have in effect, been taken over.

When the internet control goes, so goes EVERY BIT OF INFORMATION that will go against the globalists leftist agenda. We are, in so many ways, already the ignorant masses. After tomorrow, if this goes through, we will be, in effect, in the same boat as the oppressed people of places like North Korea.

Congress is not stopping it. Heard today the muslim terrorist “refugee” registered to vote illegally in Washington State and voted in the LAST 3 ELECTIONS!!!!!

He’s supporting Hillary Clinton in this election.

Trey Gowdy is - but he’s not my Congressman, and I can’t get through to him.

If this does go through, Congress can relax.
Why?
There won’t be any emails from any of the constituents!!!

And the incentive for Congress to save a technology that gives wider exposure to their foibles (and worse), allows people to organize on issues and for opposing candidates, and puts constituents one email away (instead of the old four days for a USPS letter) is what?

Few groups have a greater incentive to see the internet regulated than sitting members of Congress.

Obama is so evil

I’m a Trump supporter but if Cruz manages to save the Internet, I’ll become a Cruz supporter too, otherwise we might not even be able to see this site or what is really going on ,Drudge , etc. in a very short time.

The internet is, in the final analysis, an open system of communications available to anyone with the expertise and resources to use it. If ICANN goes the way of the DODO another system will replace it in sort order. The WWW cannot be controlled. Totalitarians can restrict some of its activity for a sort time but the traffic is such a blizzard of motion those restrictions become meaningless in short order.

Is it CAN Congress save the internet, or WILL they?

As Trump said in Wisconsin... “Follow the money”.

Too late. This article is from September 11th. GOP did nothing. As always. The kenyan will get what he wants tomorrow when the ICANN contract expires.

Guess we'll see how long freedom lasts on the Internet.I'm sure they will try to censor it as soon as these Muslims can(57 Muslim countries).

I said Trump should team up with Cruz after he endorsed him , maybe Cruz could have gotten Trump to mention this in the debate and stopped it.

I'm a Trump supporter but we needed Cruz for this and Rubio for Florida as it will all come down to Florida. I got attacked here by other fellow Trump supporters not all some for mentioning a Trump cruz rubio alliance. Now it will be harder to elect Trump with a censored Internet. but if Trump wins I know he can get the Internet back

too bad this WSJ piece has a 9/11/2016 date line.

I think the train has left the station on saving the internet from global control.

I think mitch mcconnell’s continuing resolution took care of the transfer.

“Cornyn ... already on board.”

Maybe I’m late to the party, but this is the first I’ve heard of that.

Was there a statement from Cornyn to that effect?

At least Cruz is trying...

Got thru to Cruz offices, the offices are still open and messages will be forwarded

Cruz has just sent a letter to the NTIA National Telecommunication Information Administration (in the Dept. of Commerce) asking that the transfer be delayed until Congress can vote on this issue as it was not part of the House or Senate votes this week.

Suggested contacting leadership MCCONNELL AND COYNYN TO LET THE KNOW YOU WANT NTIA TO DELAY TRANSFER AND A VOTE IN SENATE.

That is the best we can do for now...I will be leaving comments with them as well as House Leadership...

It would be lovely if you're right.
When the Clintons had Elian Gonzalez grabbed in a closet by masked Federal police and shipped back to Castro, it felt like my country died.
When our elected Congress and President peacefully take our American taxpayer funded invention and hand it over to anti-American agents, it feels like the epitaph has been written, “we used the rope they gave us to hang ourselves.”

I cannot tell you where I read that, it’s been within the last couple of weeks but I forget the source. I did file it in one of my remaining brain cells that he’s on board. If you have differing information please ping me. I have contacted his office to support having that rider attached to the budget tho.

I typically contact the reps offices even if i think they agree with me anyway because i want my opinion in there.
