True, they are selfies, but there's method to his madness.

He holds himself out, in a "Fuhrer" sort of way, as the most knowledgeable and wonderful person out there. So, he shows himself experiencing these memorable personalities, places, and moments. Then, we are supposed to feel the way he supposes we should feel because of our empathy with him, our Supreme Emotional Leader.

It's the Great Leader technique, combining repetition with the natural monkey see/monkey do tendency to imitate those who are socially above us.
