An iconic American company, McDonalds, has quietly outsourced the jobs of 70 white-collar professionals in Ohio to foreign H-1B workers.
The H-1Bs outsourcing in the nations heartland showcases the growing corporate effort to use foreign H-1B workers to cut workforces of American white-collar professionals, and it comes after companies have used waves of legal and illegal migrants to slash blue-collar jobs and wages in Ohio and around the country.
Also, the 70 Ohio jobs that McDonalds outsourced to lower wage foreign graduates are not Silicon Valley technology and software jobs theyre white-collar accounting jobs performed by graduates from mainstream business schools. That outsourcing of mainstream business jobs spotlights the growing movement of foreign workers into all corners of the nations white-collar professional economy.
White-collar outsourcing is not just a Silicon Valley thing anymore, it is happening all over the country, said Steve Camarota, head of research at the Center for Immigration Studies.
The outsourcing in Columbus, Ohio, was explained as a cost saving effort by a McDonalds spokeswoman. To deliver $500 million in savings, the vast majority by the end of 2017, we are restructuring many aspects of our business, including an accounting function, said spokeswoman Terri Hickey.

>>And thus, socialism and cronies establish a sick symbiosis. If you arent in on the special deals, it sucks for poor you.
Yep. The “Progressive” future is capitalism for the elites, communism for the masses. And that’s how every great socialist experiment winds up.
In general a contractor is in the same boat. Being one’s own B2B contractor can recoup some of the bite, but most hiring firms prefer established contracting firms.
This could be a preventative move. They see a voracious government ready to snap up more and more of their futures. So might as well make as much hay as possible while the sun shines.
And this is kind of how China looks now, with their market communism. Where did the consciences of our modern liberals go? Why do their hearts not bleed when it is Chinese swords that are poised?
I really got pounded on the other day by a chap who was convinced that cronies were the worst evil, while being really easy on socialism.
This chap, supposedly a serious Christian, has not yet recognized what C. S. Lewis wrote about decades ago — the devil sends errors into the world in pairs, and the very MOMENT you say “especially” about opposition to one of them, you’ve set yourself up to careen right into the other one.
I worked for a company that slashed hundreds of low/mid-level accounting jobs a couple of years ago, mostly in Texas but also around the country, and sent those jobs to Indonesia.
That crap, to me, is more despicable than the H-1B’s.
It's not just government or corporate greed. A recent survey showed that most Americans choose lowest price over the "Made in USA" label. If companies are going to sell their products in that environment, they're going to HAVE to go with cheaper labor.
If we want companies to hire Americans again, then WE have to make it profitable to do so by buying the products of those who do.
I'm sure Gov Kasick will step up and demand this not happen (sarcasm, of course)
This should help Trump in OH.
We might be able to say “psychological” and “logistical” arguments here. People who have the motive to pull up roots and go where the demand is (and once they do, whether it is across the globe or across the land matters little with modern travel) are going to be viewed as more dedicated.
I found this out when, having gone broke from an absence of local work, I opened my job ads up to “contracting in the entire USA.” Suddenly a drought turned into a flood. I had virtually H1B’d myself without ever leaving the country. Or maybe this is “Grapes of Wrath” writ small.
So they outsourced 70 jobs and saved $500 million??? I wonder what their benefit package looked like.
You’re absolutely right; H-1Bs are just used to erode workers’ gains of the last century. Often their wages aren’t significantly lower; they just work 7 days a week (as described to me by an American programmer that had to deal with them). The Americans would leave on Friday to return Monday, while the Indians would be working over the weekend as well.
They might, and yet the quality isn’t the same. 7 days of hacking vs. 5 days of intensely purposed programming.
If we were going to be tin foil minded enough, we might even say this is part of a demonic scheme to discourage family ties (since globe trotting like this is hard on families).
How do you outlaw corporate outsourcing? Especially if you are running on a campaign to reduce business regulations and not increase them?

Lewis was brilliant. I’ve never heard of him saying that. Thanks for posting it. It is so true.
Did you not read the article? "To deliver $500 million in savings, the vast majority by the end of 2017, we are restructuring many aspects of our business, including an accounting function..." So what regulations suddenly made it necessary for McDonalds to outsource it's accounting?
This is greed, nothing more and nothing less. The promise to cut costs so that their stock prices go up. If you honestly believe that ending regulations and eliminating corporate income taxes is going to end this then you are naive. Cut back on regulations and eliminate taxes and the corporations will love you for it...and will continue to outsource everything they can.
Yes, yes, yes...a thousand times yes.
McDonald's violated no laws because they didn't hire any H-1Bs. They contracted with an outside company to perform their accounting functions, thus eliminating 70 jobs. It is the outsoucing company, Genpact, that is bringing in the H-1Bs and that's probably just for knowledge transfer. Within a year or so 95% of the work will be done in India.
The job of the US government is to work for the benefit of US citizens - not foreign citizens, and not corporate entities - and that is the factor that needs to be predominant in policy. Right now the US government has both placed an economic overhead on US citizens while offering employers a way to circumvent that overhead, in the process disadvantaging US citizens (in a major way) in the market.
Yes, a smart US citizen can figure out a way to succeed even in these challenging conditions. I did something similar for myself but that’s not really the issue; outliers do not describe the general case.
The perspective of the H1-B worker is not a factor here. Don’t care what motivates them or how they feel about the situation. Their interests should not be considered at all, because our government doesn’t work for them - it works (or should) for us.
The bottom line is that the H1-B policy constitutes a deliberate destruction of the economic power of US citizens who sell (or would sell, if they could) their labor for a living (which is the vast majority). These twin policies, and the extensive government interference in the market that they represent, go directly against the interests of the people.
How many of those foreign workers have fake foreign degrees? And if they’re willing to do that, what else would they do in your accounting department? McDonald’s are idiots as well as being anti-American.
