CHAMPAIGN A Social Security Administration employee who believes he shouldn't have to watch a workplace diversity video about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, because it violates his religious beliefs, fears he may lose his job because of it.
David Hall, 42, of Tolono has worked for the federal agency for 14 years, based in the Champaign office as an area systems coordinator, an information technology position.
In late April, Hall said, employees nationwide received an email from the agency about a 17-minute LGBT diversity and inclusion training video that they were told to watch at their work stations. Employees were required to certify that they had seen the video.
Hall said he is a Christian "not anti-anyone or anything," but "for God, for Jesus" and believes the Bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin.
So, he didn't watch it.
His supervisor gave him direct orders to do so first on June 2, then again on June 24. Again, Hall refused both times.
As a result, an official reprimand was placed in his file the first he has ever received, he says and he was suspended without pay for two days, Aug. 15-16.

If I had a nickel for every time a person—a.k.a. my children, when we discuss the news regarding some recent slaughter by a Muslim—commented to me that Christians murder people in the name of their religion, I’d have a nice little ... well, it would make a tiny dent in what my husband and I have spent on them. ;)
They both have Muslim friends. So I understand. And actually, I do too (have a Muslim friend). But seriously.
After I remind them that the Inquisition was a very long time ago (not even sure they know what that was; I think they just are trained to say that religious extremists are all the same), I say, “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but nine times out of ten, terrorists are Muslim.”
I’d like to see this get to a Trump Supreme Court and put a nail in that coffin.
How weird to force someone who is different to due something that opposes what makes him different.

I can understand wanting to do something about it if he is that upset, but who would want to lose a good job with benefits like that?
And if he is fired, he will be known, publicly, as a troublemaker. He may not be able to find other employment.
I am thinking this through with each post; everyone has such good ideas.

Supervisor asked, in a meeting (they were big on "team meetings"), if I had learned anything.
I said:
White people are racist.
Men are pigs.
Homosexual sex is superior to normal sex.
You could have sent me a email and I wouldn't be 3 days behind on my work.
He deserves to get fired. Any bureaucrat worth his salt would attend, sleep through it, and get his “chitman” signed and be done with it.
This was a workstation video that he was required to watch privately, on company time at his convenience. Still, he would have been required to affirm that he had watched it. That was the point of violating his conscience.
That’s a weird hill to die on. Yeah diversity training is stupid, but it’s the company dime, and the company time. If they want you to waste it waste it. i click through idiotic ethics training every year that entirely discusses situations my job title couldn’t possibly run into (I buy and sell nothing for the company) because that’s what the company’s lawyers say they should have us do.
In the long run it’s just legal cover for the company. That way if you do something that somebody finds offensive when they sue they can “well we trained him this was unacceptable, and when we found out he was in violation we fired him” and avoid “hostile workplace” culpability. They don’t really care if an employee actually believes the video, they just want documentation that they took the necessary steps.

I don’t see ow this is offensive to his religion but whatever.
ROFLMAO! Christians and white people are NOT part of any diversity. Well, I suppose white gay men are --- but, "normal" folk, not so much. Yes, I did intend to intimate that white, Christian heterosexuals are "normal" folk.
My husband has to do this at his workplace every year. He has been at the same place for over a decade. AND, it is the same video every year.
