Dell-EMC to Lay Off 2,000 – 3,000 US Workers after Requesting 5,000 H-1B Visas
Wolf Street ^ | 9 September 2016 | Wolf Richter

The ink was barely dry on Dell’s acquisition of EMC, the largest technology deal ever, valued at $67 billion when it was announced in October last year – and already the layoff rumors are oozing from the woodwork.

But Dell needs to save some money, one way or the other. Dell’s corporate credit rating is at the upper end of junk. It’s loaded to the gills with debt, stemming from when it was taken private. Now the EMC deal has piled new debt on the company, including $20 billion of bonds it sold in May, followed by a $5-billion leveraged loan.

Technology workers NEED a union and a huge lobbying effort to kill H-1B.

No, I didn’t buy it direct from Dell. But after a year, it’s a little late to be crying to the seller.

I expected better service from Dell, at any rate, as it IS their product. The last time the techs had it, they set it to “Administrator” and I’m not knowledgeable enough about computers to take that off. I called Dell, and painfully listened to the guy’s rapid mangled English, and was able to by-pass the Admin requirements, but it is still there, waiting for an Admin to open it.

Another reason to have sent the darn thing back and tell them to keep it in a dark, moist place.

Less govt regs and taxers are not enough. Kill H-1B and MORE tariffs.

Sir, it’s rare that I agree 100% with a FR respondent to something I said. You are so absolutely correct on each point you make.

Thank you.

Just remove health care out of employment benefit. And american corporations will be competitive again.
Jobs and prosperity will grow in america.
Also reducing corporate tax and insane regulations will help.
Also end medicare. End social security for new workers. Also end public education, that will save the country.
Also end pensions in public sector (congressman, president, all state and federal employees included) except military.
Live free or die.

Aha...you are overlooking the difference between Swiss hiring and American hiring. Swiss will always hire Swiss first, even if they require higher wages. So, the Swiss worker can afford to buy at Swiss prices.
I guess I made my point then.

In United States, there is national loyalty in corporations. They always put profit before patriotism, as you correctly point out. Therefore American workers are forced to shop at Walmart prices. If American workers were paid American wages, most can and will buy American made products. I would rather make $60/hour and buy $100 sneakers made in America than work on 2 part jobs at $15/hour and buy $19.95 sneakers at Walmart.
SO WOULD I.
I always buy American when I buy here. However, on the Internet, I bought something from Bali because I couldn't find it here...a carved wooden statue of a Siamese cat for my brother-in-law. He loved our cat. He often said that the cat thought he was a dog.
SOME things I simply cannot find in our stores or on the Internet...made here.

These fat corps and others who do this have as much allegiance to the U.S. as Somalia does. A lot of things that are legal are also unethical. And since tens of thousands of employers in the U.S. hire millions of low wage illegal labor, the chances of them also contributing to and supporting imported legal low wage labor, are very likely.
AMEN.
An APPALLING example of the underlined: same-sex "marriage unions" are LEGAL but there isn't much else that more UNETHICAL, corrupt, ungodly and Satanic.

I can assure you these companies couldn't careless how many Americans they put out of work, as long as they get their low wage labor $$, be it legal or illegal. No allegiance, zero. And they pay *big* to make sure these corrupt politicians keep these dangerous chain immigration polices intact. But I'm very confident you'll be seeing some big changes in the future focusing on these country killing reckless policies that only our enemies love.
Amen to all that too.

Don't be naive. Some do, and I can assure you all these corrupt professional politicians certain do! Don't believe me, just look at these punitive dangerous policies.

They sure don't seem to have the support that you suggest, but perhaps I'm being cynical.

Btw, you probably noticed, that state is a complete total failure run by crazy people. No? It's certainly not something you should be using as a benchmark or model.☺

I would LOVE more and more and more and more and more people to leave California. There are way, way, way TOO many people here now. I NEVER thought that the influx of people was a good thing...never. Why would it be?
I think that the foreigners who didn't take care of their yards/gardens and house paint were just annoying.
I thought that the poor foreign women trying to negotiate the freeways and city traffic were to be pitied...they sure looked SCARED to death.
The foreigners will work for less but they don't have the TIES THAT BIND here and thus often feel that they can simply disappear whenever they want. Who can depend on that mentality?

THINK how ALL prices would fall: property, food, property, clothing, property, gas and, of course, property.
THINK how less congested the freeways would be.
THINK how much less city traffic there would be.
THINK how much easier EVERYTHING would be.
THINK: AMERICANS doing AMERICAN jobs.

That would be wonderful.

I did have a chuckle a few months ago. I was coming to a stop sign and was obeying the traffic signs PERFECTLY because I had a police car right behind me.
When I got to the stop sign the driver on my right, an Asian man, saw me, winked, gave me a HUGE, toothy grin (crooked teeth, thus not an ABC) and RAN THE STOP SIGN, turning left across me, right past the cop car--which he never saw. HAHAHAHA!!
That squad car did the fastest, sharpest uey I have EVER seen...and he nailed the guy. I WAS going to stop and watch the ticket given, but I didn't, having already gotten my gift of the month from above.

Americans don't support U.S. industries. Just look at all the Japanese and German cars Americans drive.

I think you are wrong here. Do not blame American workers. Blame the cheap labor express for LOWERING American wages and standards of living. That is why Americans are forced to buy cheap Chinese goods at Walmart.

I would still go to them and relay your experiences, telling them that Dell apparently does not care about individuals that buy their computers. You would be surprised what they might do for you because you are that retail outlet’s customer that I’m sure they would like as a repeat customer.

I think you are wrong here. Do not blame American workers. 1. Blame the cheap labor express for LOWERING American wages and standards of living. 2. That is why Americans are forced to buy cheap Chinese goods at Walmart.

1. Exactly WHO is the "cheap labor express"? American farmers hire the cheap Mexican labor. American householders hire the cheap nannies. American computer companies USED to hire the cheap Indian labor in Sillycon Valley. Americans hire the "cheap" to enrich their wallets. Why else would they do it?

2. Since when is ANY American "forced" to buy ANYthing? S/he can buy where s/he wants, whenever s/he wants.

HOWEVER, if you think that I'm wrong here, that is your privilege, since this IS the "Free" Republic. I certainly respect your right to disagree.
