Behind scenes, NBC execs concede Matt Lauer forum performance was "disaster"
CNN Money ^ | 9-8-2016 | Brian Stelter

NBC News knows the "Commander-in-Chief Forum" was not Matt Lauer's finest hour.

One executive, speaking anonymously, was blunt about it: "Disaster."

The morning after Lauer's back-to-back interviews of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, several high ranking sources at the network said they hear the criticism and agree with at least some of it.

Lauer was widely criticized for failing to fact-check or follow up when Trump falsely claimed that he was opposed to the Iraq war when it started. Some viewers thought Lauer held Clinton to a higher standard than Trump. Several people who were sitting in the audience told CNN that they were frustrated too.

The ratings for Wednesday night's forum were strong, according to preliminary data. But the reviews were pitiful. So what went wrong? That's what journalists both inside and outside NBC are asking now. There is no clear answer.

Lack of preparation is one theory.

New York Times TV critic James Poniewozik wrote Thursday that Lauer seemed "unprepared on specifics of military and foreign policy: "He performed like a soldier sent on a mission without ammunition, beginning with a disorganized offensive, ending in a humiliating retreat."

But Lauer's interviewing skills are second to none. He has hosted thousands of episodes of the "Today" show.

And he had a week to prep for the forum.

Honestly, I was expecting Lauer to ask Trump why he ripped the poster off the gas station wall.

[The Stern interview BEFORE the war shows Trump was opposed to the war. Trump did not falsely claim that. ]

On Megan Kelly last night, she and her guests mentioned Trump’s quote when he was on the Stern show....

I wish one of the panelists had the balls to ask Megyn about HER appearance on the show and her “killer B’s”...

“He failed because Trump is a lot better at this stuff than people realize.”

Trump has gotten in more reps than Hill. Bigger idiots have fallen to Trump thinking THEY will be the one to shoot Billy The Kid.

So Lauer forgot to urinate on Trump's shoes at the end.

Hey, stuff happens. He'll make up for it later.

Just liberals upset Trump didn’t get taken down and Hillary had to spend her time continuing to lie about her emails... nothing more than that.

Any result where Hillary was not hoisted and Trump not brutally destroyed libs were going to whine about it.

We tend to forget Trump’s clarity and leadership have a large capacity to create converts in the press or at least to demand fair reporting. Trump has turned the corner and you will begin to see people in media concluding that the man does, in fact, have the kind of intelligence and decisiveness that America has been craving since Reagan. The globalist fascist financier oligarch ideologues and their lackeys in the mainstream press, the ones incapable of learning, are going to look like 4th of July fireworks when their heads begin to explode. Popcorn, more popcorn...

Exactly!

His quick retort with that Tweet from 2013 wasn’t enough to satisfy the embarrass Trump camp at CNN?

And talk about not fact checking or holding one to a higher standard than the other. What about when Clinton “answered” the question (ONE question) about her emails? NO follow up from baldy.

And what about when she claimed no one died in Libya thanks to her?! Hello! Does the city name “Benghazi” mean anything to you Matt??

If the attacks against Mattie today based on Hillary’s failures last night do not expose what the left is intending to do at the upcoming Debates to the Trump Camp nothing will.

After today no Liberal Debate Moderator will let Trump give a sentence in answering a question without either calling him a liar or challenging what ever he says.

Anyone Remember Obama and Candy?

I think Lauer is about to learn what happens to TV Talking Heads that don’t play along with whatever the latest Democrat Group-Think and memes are today.

Megyn was definitely showing off during her appearance.

I wish she’d get over her butthurt with Trump.

In 2002, BEFORE the War when asked if he supported invading Iraq, Trump could only say “I guess so”. Then he added a complaint about the previous war being conducted poorly by BushI.

“I guess so” is far from a ringing endorsement, and is just a notch above ‘maybe’. I think such an answer shows him NOT in support but still in a deciding mode.

Hillary has the same problems he’s always had...

The more folks see her, the less they like her and the lower she polls.... period.

Why do you think they carpet bagged her into the NY Senate Seat instead of say a VA or OH or FL Senate seat? Because they knew she’d have friendly crowds and phone it in.

She’s a terrible candidate, period. She has no innate skills, is not likable and comes across as a complete phony and disingenuous.

Anyone who thinks Hillary and Trump can share a stage life and unfiltered, and she not come out the loser, no matter how much they try to stack the deck in her favor is in flat out denial.

GIF of the earpiece.

Matt interrupted her 7 times and Trump 12.

They want to warn other journ-o-lists that they will hammer anyone coming close to asking Hill real questions.

They are just using it as an excuse to attack Trump in the debates even more than they were already planning on doing. We have reached the point where the media has to be entirely removed from being involved with the debates. They are now aligned against the American people, not with them.
