In his message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Thursday, Pope Francis said that human-induced global warming, as well as a loss of biodiversity are sins against God, which must be atoned for by planting trees, avoiding the use of plastic and paper and separating refuse.
Global warming continues, due in part to human activity, Francis said, adding that 2015 was the warmest year on record, and 2016 will likely be warmer still.
This is leading to ever more severe droughts, floods, fires and extreme weather events. Climate change is also contributing to the heart-rending refugee crisis. The worlds poor, though least responsible for climate change, are most vulnerable and already suffering its impact, he wrote.
Repeatedly citing the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who has courageously and prophetically continued to point out our sins against creation, Francis made his own a new list of such environmental sins, which include pollution, global warming and deforestation.
For human beings to destroy the biological diversity of Gods creation, to degrade the integrity of the earth by causing changes in its climate, to contaminate the earths waters, its land, its air, and its lifethese are sins, he wrote.
Summing up, the Pope stated that to commit a crime against the natural world is a sin against ourselves and a sin against God.
Lamenting the devastation of the environment, Francis said that God gave us a bountiful garden, but we have turned it into a polluted wasteland of debris, desolation and filth.
Specifically regarding a loss of biodiversity, the Pope suggested that now there are fewer species to give glory to God.
We must not be indifferent or resigned to the loss of biodiversity and the destruction of ecosystems, often caused by our irresponsible and selfish behavior,

Francine can kiss may *ss
On the other hand, since I'm factually incapable of warming the planet, I guess I'm safe.
Boy, am I safe.
You’re right of course. Conservative & Traditional Catholics have some serious choices to make.
“...Francis said that God gave us a bountiful garden, but we have turned it into a polluted wasteland of debris, desolation and filth.
Not very nice to talk about Congress like that.
If the church does not want politics involved in their affairs then they might want to pump the brakes on the global warming scam.
Hard to know what to say....
Or you could join me in thanking God that at least it isn’t an encyclical, an apostolic exhortation, a motu proprio or anything that of its nature asks to be taken remorely seriously. Sometimes when the Pope talks, he isn’t doing much more than warming the air. This is pretty close to the Papal equivalent of a letter from the President congratulating someone for their 100th Birthday. A bit more thought was put into it by somebody, but the somebody was likely an underling and in the end all it is is a message for one of an innumerable number of days for commemorating some cause or other.
That is quite harsh don’t you think?
I’m sort of disappointed in the Pope . I thought a “pope” would be a little brighter than this and have better discernment in detecting deception. Turns out he’s no smarter than a liberal.
Drop dead, poop Frank.
Moire ‘global warming’ horse sh*t.
Ths Pope should stick to religious rites and rituals.
Sounds like a works salvation plan to me....for a non-existent sin.
I’ll take the “It is finished” work of Christ, Alex.
Stop the world I want to get off.
Pope Che says “Jesus saves, but you folks need to recycle”.
Eh, meh. the Red Pope is red.
Hard to know what to say....
very shortly, I’m sure the FR contingent that always tells us how ‘traditional’ Bergoglio is will have plenty to say...
This guy has brought theology to a comic book level and it is not even a good comic book.
Pray for Francis, that his eyes be opened.
How does that Paul Shanklin song go?
“If there’s one thing that this world needs,
it’s environmental friends who’ll take the lead,
in a Yugo”
Let the Pope take the lead by trading in his Pope-mobile for a Yugo.
If the church does not want politics involved in their affairs then they might want to pump the brakes on the global warming scam.
neither the modern Catholic Church, nor any other modern church, seems to be able to get their fingers out of politics...they’re drowning in a marinade of Social Justice dressing...
Let me make a suggestion, the man is a fool and he does not know it.
Pray for Francis, that his eyes be opened.
nah...let him sleep; he does less damage...
