Precisely! At a time of great optimism in the US and practically unbridled productivity. Not a time when you would expect a prophet to say it’s doomed under certain conditions, and then describe those conditions so precisely. No matter how flawed the book, it is an amazing piece of literature. I read it as a counterpoint to the earlier leftist propaganda of The Grapes of Wrath.
