The presidential election could be delayed or scrapped altogether if conspiracy theories become predictive and a candidate dies or drops out before Nov. 8. The perhaps equally startling alternative, if there's enough time: Small groups of people hand-picking a replacement pursuant to obscure party rules.
The scenarios have been seriously considered by few outside of the legal community and likely are too morbid for polite discussion in politically mixed company. But prominent law professors have pondered the effects and possible ways to address a late-date vacancy.
"There's nothing in the Constitution which requires a popular election for the electors serving in the Electoral College," says John Nagle, a law professor at the University of Notre Dame, meaning the body that officially elects presidents could convene without the general public voting.

Obama better not try to remain one second beyond 1-20-2017.
we're sheeple...Americans are sheeple...
And that’s the name o’ THAT tune.
So now the Democrat’s only hope is that cankles cacks-off.
Maybe that was their plan nominating her...
Sounds like foreshadowing to me. They know something about Clinton’s health, or know the elites are going to try to off Trump.
Violent resistance? Please. People let ferals destroy their cities and don’t raise a finger.
I think that situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part!
We’re just the guys to do it.
I find it morbid and somewhat alarming that a reporter was given this assignment; write up the after effect of a candidate’s death less than 100 days before the national election.
I’m guessing this was a liberal publication, because if it were a conservative organization doing such idle speculation, they would immediately be called dangerous and wanting to provoke criminal activity. There would be loud, clear and constant condemnation from media outlets.
And why would that be? There are still choices unless all but one candidate shuffles off this mortal coil. There’s nothing in the Constitution that requires any one political party has to have a candidate available under such circumstances. The write-in vote is always available.
Look for a legal abomination like the one pepetrated in New Jersey when a ‘Rat candidate croaked.
SCONJ basically ruled that the Democrat Party was what people were voting for. There had to be someone with a D after their name on the ballot and it didn’t matter who. It could be anyone.
I’m no conspiracy theorist, but you have to wonder why something like this would be put out there about two months before an election. In US News and World Report no less. Why is this relevant now when it hasn’t been before in years past?
Wishful thinking, but The Constitution sets the election date — in stone. If a party cannot field a candidate, tough!
The party determines how its candidate is selected. The party is responsible for getting candidates names on state ballots.
Maybe 0bama will kill them both.
Really strange article.
Good question!
Don’t recall ever seeing the subject come up in any other election year
“Trial balloon”
Trial balloon for Hillary to step aside? The MSM doesn’t just float stories like this for the heck of it. I think, behind the scenes, there is speculation that, due to legal troubles or health, or a combination of both, a Hillary may need to step down.
8 to 10 years...
“Obama better not try to remain one second beyond 1-20-2017.”
