A North Carolina state trooper shot dead a deaf and mute man who was apparently trying to communicate using sign language after he was pulled over for a speeding violation.
Daniel Kevin Harris, 29, a father to a four-year-old boy, was killed just feet from his home in Charlotte by trooper Jermaine Saunders on Thursday evening.
Police say Saunders tried to pull Harris over for a speeding violation on Interstate 485 at around 6.15pm, but the driver led authorities on a brief pursuit before stopping.
Officials said that's when the driver got out of his car and an encounter took place between the driver and the trooper, causing a shot to be fired. Harris died at the scene.
But witnesses said Harris – who was unarmed – was shot ‘almost immediately’ after he exited his vehicle, WCNC reports.

The dead guy had issues apparently. Previous arrests, etc. This isn’t a cut and dry one for the cop haters, IMO.
I was driving in a yellow MG midget from Cecil Field in FL to my home in MA back in 1978, and I was driving straight through, because...I am on leave, and have to get home to party with my friends!
So, I am driving up I-95 north, crossing from NC into VA, and I have been on the road for...probably10-12 hrs with barely a bathroom break. I have music on, and am just doodling along in the left lane, doing about 60-65 back when it was 55 everywhere, when I look in my rear-view mirror to see lights behind me. I had no idea there was even a cop behind me, I was just zoning a little bit.
I pull over, and the cop gets out, slams his door, and stomps up to my car. When he gets there, he puts both hands on the door (pretty low for an MG) and sticks his entire mirror-sunglasses face and Smoky The Bear hat into the window (not easy to do in that car) and yells at me “BOY. YOU WERE SPEEDING!”
I kind of stuttered, because he was so close, and I think I was going a little over the limit, but before I could get anything out, he said “I followed you for about five miles, right behind you, giving you every chance to pull over and let me pass. I saw you look at me, and then just keep driving! I think you are just being a wise ass.”
I really was stuttering, partially because I couldn’t afford to get a ticket, and partially because I am usually pretty deferential to authority and try to be polite to them, and said “Really...I honestly didn’t see you back there...I have been driving for a while and didn’t even see you! I honestly wasn’t being a wise ass!”
He didn’t even bother to check my license and registration. He pointed north, and said “The border is up there. If I see you speeding again around here, you’re going to get a ticket, or worse.”
I said “Yes Sir!” and drove off!
Normally, I do scan constantly, but...I had been on the road for a while!
