Helen Maroulis wins USA's first gold medal in women's wrestling (Sweet Lady!)

It took some time, but the United States now has a gold medalist in women's wrestling.
And to earn it, Helen Maroulis had to beat a woman who knows a thing or two about gold medals: Japan's Saori Yoshida, a 13-time world champion and three-time reigning Olympic champion.
It was a gold medal showdown that the wrestling world had been looking forward to for a long time. Maroulis, the reigning world champion at 55kg, versus Yoshida, the reigning world champion at 53kg.
The first period ended with Yoshida leading 1-0 after Maroulis failed to convert when put on the 30-second shot clock. The American came out strong in the second period though, getting two takedowns to earn a 4-1 victory on points.
And with that, Maroulis added "Olympic champion" to her résumé.

Full Disclosure: I have known Helen for years. She’s one of those hard working athletes in an unrecognized and low-publicity sport whose devotion to excellence is equaled by her character.
Having known scores of medalists, this win was far different for me -
Way to go, Helen!

Wrestling was by far the hardest sport I ever did in high school. I can’t imagine what Olympic level wrestlers go through. Kudos to her.

“shot clock” is the author’s term - - he’s stuck on other sports.
The weight classes resulted in two Champions.

BigEdLB, Jr is a Sophomore in High School. He will be on the wrestling team this year. The PE teacher urged him to go for wrestling or basketball, because he had agility, height, and is thin. 6-1 and 155 at age 15. Good for the lady. Getting used to what is done in practice. It’s tough work.

Wrestlers have a certain time limit on ‘shooting a takedown’; if they exceed the limit, they’re fined penalty points.
Thus, the ‘shot clock.’
