Trumped nationally, Ted Cruz looks to get his Texas groove back
Austin American-Statesman ^ | 1:19 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2016 | Jonathan Tilove

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz was crisscrossing Texas this week, meeting with constituents in Houston, El Paso, San Antonio, Laredo, Amarillo, Lubbock, Dallas and Tyler. It wasn’t how Cruz had once hoped to be spending the second week of August, when, had things gone his way, he might have been hopscotching battleground states as the Republican nominee for president.

Instead, it was Donald Trump with rallies and speeches in North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Pennsylvania — Donald Trump, who Cruz refused to endorse for president in his speech at the Republican National Convention in July, and who, the day after he accepted the nomination in Cleveland, said he would not accept Cruz’s endorsement if it were offered and swore he would spend what he could to defeat Cruz for re-election.

And so, Cruz found himself doing what a U.S. senator does during the August recess, particularly a senator who is up for a second term in two years and who, for the first time in his swift rise in Texas and national politics, finds himself not the hunter but the prey.

“I know there are people looking for someone to run against Ted Cruz because I’ve had four or five national leaders call to ask if I had an interest, which I don’t by the way,” said former Texas Republican Party Chairman Steve Munisteri, who added that Cruz’s traversing Texas is exactly what he ought to be doing right now.

Among Republicans being recruited to challenge Cruz, according to a recent CNN story, is U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, a six-term congressman from Austin who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee. McCaul spokesman Walter Zaykowski said the congressman is focused on his job and re-election campaign this year — but he did not rule out a Senate run.

Cruz has hurt himself in my opinion, by not being above board about his Canadian citizenship prior to his run for the Texas Senate. We’ll see if that becomes an issue his 2nd time around. I do think it will prevent any future run for the presidency.

All along, I’ve thought he’d be best in the judiciary.

GOP Inc needs Ted Cruz to help cultivate it’s image of obnoxious, out of touch, easily befuddled white guys. It’s who we are!

I am waiting for more dirt on his cheating on Heidi to come out. I never bought his Holy Roller routine, seen Jimmy Swaggart try and get away with that and failed. Cruz isn’t half the act that Jimmy was.

Until Ted decides to back Trump 100% in keeping with his pledge, I’ll definitely vote against him, if anyone else is actually acceptable. If nobody else is there, I’ll have to walk away.

Ted can’t keep a promise, I can’t help keep him in my government.

“He’s been chosen by God to lead this country.”

Are you referring to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ? THAT God?

Cruz ran for the Senate in the first place only so he could run for president four years later

Exactly correct, his first trip to Iowa was just a couple of months after winning his senate seat. Cruz does not support the presidential nominee of his party, that alone should disqualify him for any GOP office. But add to that he pledged to the republican voters that he would support the GOP nominee no matter what and you have get a picture of Cruz being an arogeant lying ass. Ted Cruz's word is no good. If Cruz gets a quality opponent (not McCaul) he will lose in the Texas R primary. I look forward to voting for his opponent.

Cruz got out of the race because of the heat that photo of his dad with Oswald put on them.

No accusation but I am sure more bad stuff was going to come out about the Cruz/ Oswald friendship, and Ted got out of the presidential race like a scalded dog runs away.

And just days after Turd Cruzifer vowed to stay in thru California.

Going after Trump’s backers calling them low information, ignorant, etc. was one of his biggest mistakes.

And the media and Clinton are doing it again - now we are being called fascists. This is going to endear us to HRC -right.

Joe, There is something very strange occurring where progressives of all types are threatening or engaging Scientology Disconnection process of stopping being friends with any Trump supporter.

The New York Times had a story along these lines of justifying this childish response just yesterday. This is where they are at to try to get Hillary across the line ... Shunning and ostracism is what they are down to using.

I've heard this from several fairly "serious" people. Trump has done us so many favors in exposing losers among us at all levels.

Progressive realize the propaganda isn't working the plays from the play book aren't turning out how they should. Further most of us are now will to take the risk and loss some losers "friends" - I think this feeds into their insecurity too - we don't care what they think or call us anymore, and they know it.

We've got billionaires and tech industrialists, huge corporations and media conglomerates colluding with the government to get one of the most corrupt people to run for the presidency, one of their own, elected - and they call us fascists. We literally have opposite day everyday now.

I know its risky to go against the polls but they seems lefties are very very worried more then people that are "crushing it" should be.

Keep calling us names and de friend me - please - not you Joe but the "they".

They talk about Cruz getting his Texas groove back. Did he ever have a Texas groove to begin with? Or was he blessed with a weak opponent and was able to snow the electorate in 2012?
