A Hewlett-Packard executive and Republican fundraiser said Tuesday she will back Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for president.
Meg Whitman said she plans to give a "substantial" contribution to Clinton's campaign to make sure Republican nominee Donald Trump
doesn't become the next president.
I will vote for Hillary, I will talk to my Republican friends about helping her, and I will donate to her campaign and try to raise money for her, Whitman told The New York Times on Tuesday .
Whitman, who ran for governor of California in 2010, said she doesn't agree with Clinton on many issues, but noted that the Democratic nominee would "be a much better president than Donald Trump."
An aide to Whitman said the billionaire businesswoman would personally give Clinton's campaign at least an amount in the "mid-six figures."
In the interview, Whitman also slammed Trump and said the Republicans need to "put country first before party," according to The New York Times.
She called Trump "a dishonest demagogue" and said he could take the country "on a very dangerous journey." She also said he has "undermined the character of the nation."
She said she stands by her former comments, in which she compared Trump to Hitler and Mussolini. She made the remarks during a private gathering of Republican donors earlier this year.
Time and again history has shown that when demagogues have gotten power or come close to getting power, it usually does not end well, Whitman said.
Whitman, who spent $140 million of her own money on her gubernatorial bid, is described by the Times as "a prized defector" for Clinton. The paper notes she is close to Mitt Romney and is rare female executive in Silicon Valley.
Ron Nehring, who served as national spokesman for Ted Cruz's presidential campaign, said he doesn't agree with Whitman's endorsement, but noted the "significance of it should not be discounted." He called her an "extremely tough, smart woman."
In a series of tweets, he noted Whitman was a "major supporter" of Mitt Romney and supported New Jersey Chris Christie in the 2016 Republican primaries.
"People listen to her," he tweeted.
"Trump now has a former CAGOP Gov nominee, a NY GOP congressman and Christie staffer all supporting Hillary. This is unsustainable."
No, people are seeing how this is falling out. For every rich rino whore or douchebag that shows their true colors there’s hundreds or working class people watching and realizing “oh, that’s how it was working” and are going to vote for Trump.
Victory in November will rock, but the real frosting is going to come in the following midterms when he burns out the entrenched rot.
Trump is the kitchen light at 2 am when the cockroaches are exposed
She also said he has “undermined the character of the nation.”
Says the poster child for undermined character. Another leech that has sucked the lifeblood of the people, while working tirelessly to destroy the nation. There will be a special Hell for such as her, hope she’s in it soon.
Globaists be globalists.
Meg and Hillary are globular.
It's about time we started weeding out the socialists in the republican party. Way to go Trump!
Spent a hundred million losing a race for political office.
She’s no Trump.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: ANYONE who claims to be a conservative and votes for Hillary Clinton for ANY reason is not a true conservative or a Republican but is guilty of far worse than anything Trump has done. If you don’t like Trump so much, then just don’t vote.

Meg Whitman voting for the Bonnie, and Clyde of American politics should be a career ender for her. She obviously has some misplaced values.
These people are liberals they also are dishonest and lack morals (same thing). Anyone who supports Hillary Clinton in this election does not belong in the republican party.
I'm trying to figure out how a "president Hillary", as chief law enforcement officer of the US, is going to insist on other people following the law, when it's patently obvious that she has no longer has any need to follow the same laws.
She'll be breaking the law daily, and EVERYONE will know it.
That might have unintended consequences.
There are many rich losers.
But turning the director of the FBI into a Praetorian lawn jockey for elite lawbreakers hasn't undermined the character of the nation - to say nothing of undermining and actually DESTROYING the laws of the United States?
She screwed up Ebay. Why not America.
I guess she is pro-crime.
Exactly, Meg is just fine with that and it says volumes about her lack of character.
