"There is no stipulation anywhere that requires a security clearance for a presidential candidate. The fact that they're a candidate qualifies them," says James R. Clapper Jr., the director of National Intelligence.
Donald Trump will begin to get intelligence briefings now that he is the official GOP candidate for president.
Both Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton will get briefings as soon as next week, James R. Clapper Jr., the director of National Intelligence, said Thursday during the Aspen Security Forum.
Although Trump is a notorious tweeter and Clinton has been on the hot seat for her email server, Clapper said there is "no hesitation" to brief either candidate.
"And the reason for that is ... there is a long tradition that the intelligence community, at the appropriate time, and now is the appropriate time since both candidates have been officially anointed, both camps will be reached out to and offered briefings," Clapper said.
It will be up to both camps on whether they want to "accept" the information, he said. Teams have already been put in the place to meet with both Trump and Clinton.
"There is no stipulation anywhere that requires a security clearance for a presidential candidate. The fact that they're a candidate qualifies them," Clapper said.
The national intelligence director said it is not up to him to decide whether the two candidates are "suitable" for the classified information, he is just to deliver it.
The voters will decide who will be "cleared for everything," he added.
Aren’t the briefings pretty early in the morning? Bummer seldom attends them.
Maybe Shillary will send Huma out first thing in the morning to pick up a printed sheet for her thighness.
The bad side of that is Trump must keep SECRET everything he is told in the security briefings, or be sent to prison.
Even if they tell him facts he already knows from private investigators.
Rules WILL apply to him, but not to Cankles.
You know, I never even thought about that.
I have confidence that Trump can win.
But God forbid he doesn’t, I wont passively disregard her presidency like I did with this bozo, God forgive me.
I will ACTIVELY undermine hers.
Well, after the first week, Trump will have read more intelligence briefings than 0 has in 7.5 years.
If Bernie were to have an 11th hour change of heart and decide to head to the Green Convention to get their nomination, he would more than likely beat Stein for the nomination and make her his running mate. The Greens more or less reached out to him and guaranteed him the nomination should he seek it. The Greens are also on the ballot in all 50 states, so he would be on all state ballots in November.
He could end up getting 20 percent plus in the polls immediately, similar to Perot's numbers and make this a three way race, but instead of Perot's presence in the race clinching victory for Bill Clinton in 1992, Sander's presence as a 3rd party candidate would likely clinch it for Trump with Sander and Hillary Clinton splitting the liberal vote.
Sanders would definitely qualify to be on the debate stage with Trump and Clinton due to greater than 15 percent support in the average of polls. Maybe he would also get national security briefings, since he has a large percentage of the vote and there being a slim chance he could win it if he could pull even with Clinton and Trump.
Trump is smart enough not to yap like Dingy Harry did in that interview.
That was one of the dumbest things he ever said.
I don’t believe he was being sarcastic either.
Dingy Harry actually believed what he was so carelessly spewing.
And they call the GOP the stupid party.
SMH.
Of course Trump knows when to keep his mouth shut.
He wouldn’t have been so successful if he didn’t.
TRiUMPh
Perot was the last 3rd party person to get them
There should be a qualifying factor for congress and presidents. It would have certainly kept Obama out of office and Hillary as well
ROFL!!
While shopping at shop rite I saw a halal meat. I was blinded for a few minutes but that’s besides the point.
They’r a fortune!!! I hope welfare is keeping up with the price /s
Say what you will of Trump, he is a pugnacious looking SOB.
And tough is what we need right now, after eight years of the Kenyan pantywaist.
Right. When has has Trump ever tweeted anything that could come close to compromising security?
Another big difference between Trump and the dims—Trump is a patriot.
Even Scarborough has said when we find out how BO handled national security we will be HORRIFIED.
I always wondered how they avoid leaks on these briefings.
Maybe it goes down like this:
The candidate is walked into a large room full of distinguished defense, state, and intelligence officials. They are led around the table, shake hands, and are introduced to all of them.
Then the head of the CIA stands up, asks for silence, and announces that everyone except the candidate will now leave the room.
After everyone has left the room the CIA Director tells the candidate that he (the CIA Director) will now leave the room. The candidate is to remain seated and wait for the briefer to arrive.
Five minutes later a door opens. A gray alien walks into the room, sits in the chair next to the candidate and says “Any questions?”
;-)
When has Trump ever had any such to tweet (without the help of Julian Assange, that is)?
I know....
...it would be laughable in an alternate universe
dear mercy
Would the world be any worse off if there weren’t so many secrets kept from the “little folk”? (that’s a hypothetical; I don’t know the answer)
