Kmart employees believe the company is nearing bankruptcy and is in the process of shutting down all its stores.

The chain has closed one-third of its stores in the last decade, and sales have been cut in half in the same time period.

Store-level employees who spoke to Business Insider said many of the remaining 941 Kmart stores now appear to be in the midst of liquidation.

Stores are being entered into numbered phases — such as Phase 1 and Phase 2 — employees said.

Around here they never have any registers open.
No one wants to wait a half hour in line , I have left my cart full of stuff multiple times because I got tired of waiting .

jsanders2001 :" That hope and change isn’t working out too well is it?"

Obungler doesn't understand why the RNC convention seemed so dark and dreary
All that "Hope and Change"
has turned to "Beans and Franks" ,
and will soon be "Kibbles and Bits" !

I thought all the Kmarts closed way back around the time Abe Vigoda died.

I’m not up to date either, but a few years ago law was that once you had laid off 1/3 of your workforce you had to give 60 days notice of further major layoffs or provide severance to all future reductions in force.

Someone once read me some Jewish American Princess jokes. One of them was:

Q. What is one phrase that a Jewish American Princess will never hear?

A. "Attention K-Mart shoppers"

Here’s the list of store closings! 78 are going this year.

http://fortune.com/2016/04/22/sears-kmart-stores-close-where/

It’s more than the 78 K-Mart stores. The one in Bossier City, LA is closing in the next couple of weeks, and it’s not included in the list above.

Already happened here. Sears, which at the end was KMart by another name, also shut down.

I’ve got some great buys over the years at K-Mart. 6 Hunter ceiling fans on sale at 30$ a pop. Always found good deals there.

...don’t care much for the Kmarts around here....don’t go to Walmart either...its Fred Meyer or the Dollar Store...we have Shopko out here and its a much cleaner store than Kmart IMO..

Ditto that here. We stay out of Walmart. KMart is old, dirty and prices high compared to Fred Meyer. Shopko has great selection, but the store needs an update. Dollar Tree is always busy. Big Lots prices have gone up too much (we don't even bother going in anymore) and Hastings is going belly up.

Sears in Pocatello went away in 2012. K-Mart closed up in 2016 (early this year). Our Super Walmart was just remodeled. Same for Fred Meyer. Both stores are doing fine and have full parking lots. The Target in Idaho Falls continues to have a fairly vacant parking lot. The bathroom policy turned most of the local shoppers against them. There are plenty of alternatives that are equal or better within two blocks of Target. We lost all of the Radio Shack stores in Pocatello. Idaho Falls still has one Radio Shack with a Sprint cell phone store share premises arrangement.

Years ago I read that the real estate that the old Sears stores were built on were on main streets in small towns. What I read was that was the reason sears is valued so highly or was years ago.

I’m in a shopping desert. The nearest mall is ten miles away. We have a K-Mart about three miles away, which is handy for incidentals, garden supplies (at less than nursery prices), Christmas lights, windshield wipers, vacuum cleaner bags. Customer services will also send remittances to South America, even though our town has more people whose first language is Dutch than Spanish.

Both the Sears stores near me are gone in the last 6 months. Macedonia and Cuyahoga Falls Ohio.

The Kmarts in our area are pathetic and overpriced.

The world’s largest Kmart is here on Guam

I hope they don’t shut down. There is literally nowhere else to buy discounted clothing and housewares. We have a Ross, Kmart, Macy’s and Home Depot. If any two of those disappear I might as well move to Saipan.

I’m surprised ours hasn’t closed yet, and isn’t on the list to close; since Wal-Mart opened here Kmart has been a ghost town. I rarely go because they are seriously understaffed; it seems they’ll wait until a few customers are clustered at the Electronics register before they send someone over.

Used to be so busy I avoided it; now you can park right by the front door...

I’ll buy 60-80s era Craftsman tools on Ebay sometimes. I’ve given up on them now.

That Kobalt stuff from Lowe’s isn’t half bad now. My wife got me the black finish 150 piece socket set Stanley from Amazon a while back. I love it.

Sounds like you already experienced the liquidation cycle that this article describes.
