Kmart employees believe the company is nearing bankruptcy and is in the process of shutting down all its stores.
The chain has closed one-third of its stores in the last decade, and sales have been cut in half in the same time period.
Store-level employees who spoke to Business Insider said many of the remaining 941 Kmart stores now appear to be in the midst of liquidation.
Stores are being entered into numbered phases such as Phase 1 and Phase 2 employees said.

They better announce to the employees soon or they are going to be in a world of hurt with the Labor Dept notification rules/laws!

K-Mart is the Radio Shack of marts.
The Kmart near us is a very sad place. Its like the island of misfit toys after Santa told them to piss-off.
That may well be the perfume counter. ;)
One of my early jobs many, many years ago was nightwatchman/janitor, locked in all night, pushing a broom, straightening up, swabbing decks and firing up the grill for 3AM lunch at a small town Kmart back east. Nice, decent folks. Worked with a part timer some nights, confess to watching a little extra TV on occasion, and got to know a lot of the customers and other employees from town and locally. Can’t say it was the best job I ever had, but it was the best I could get at the time and it was clean and decent. Not too many stores, or good entry level jobs, like this left.
(I shop less than anyone I have ever known.
You are not making any effort to keep up with the Joneses! Shame on you!
I know the store here has already shut down. No loss, as far as I was concerned.
And the news source is Yahoo, which is worthless and up for sale. It is being bought by Verizon which sold its ground line business to Frontier. A fine mess....
I agree on Target. I have only been in their store once with my daughter.
I boycotted them after they told the Salvation Army Bell Ringers that they could no longer ring their bells and collect pennies at their stores.
The bathroom fiasco is ridiculous. I wouldn’t even go into the store with my daughter now.
Lol..either it’s pee or a messed up sewer either way it smells bad
Well ..... The closest K-Mart to me ..... Isn’t even close. I actually thought they were gone years ago!
I have a friend and sometimes business associate who sells a lot of product to Kmart. We spoke just this past week, and I asked him how they were on payment. He said excellent, but they were watching their aging list like a hawk regardless.
My 16 year-old car and threadbare clothes are proof (although I do need to shop some in the near future...my stuff has almost outlived me :)...but like me...it is getting worn out).
K-Mart owns Sears, too.
Does this mean that Sears is also dead?
I was never a particular fan of K mart, but it sad to see Sears trending the same way. I remember the jokes, when they merged, that the combined K mart and Sears, Roebuck and Company would form a single firm called K suck.
I’m like you, a jacket is just getting worn in when it’s ten years old. I’ve got shirts that are forty years old. My daughters wear them more than I do.
You will get better deals on TVs. If you check model number even though name of TV is same, you will find KMart has the newer offer with better tech specs. For example, Samsung 48 vs Samsung 48. Google serial numbers of models from both stores to see features and specs.
