Hillary Clinton's campaign emptied its war chest in June on Donald Trump only to see the Democratic candidate's standing in national polls rise and then drop back to where she started.

Clinton raised $40.5 million in June and spent all but a small portion of it - $39.8 million - before month's end, her most recent Federal Elections Commission filing shows.

NBC News put the amount of money spent on commercials that characterized the former first lady as a champion for women and families and Trump as a hot-head who would break of immigrants families at $9 million.

Trump hasn't run a single ad since wrapping up the GOP primary and is just two points behind Clinton nationally now. He began June three points down.
