CNN had two different people on who said Ted Cruz will not be endorsing Cruz in his speech. The one reporter said that Ted Cruz anticipates running for President in 2020 if Trump loses and wants to show his sympathies with the Never Trump movement who has supported him.
This is just as I feared when Ted was asked to speak. Trump was kind enough to ask him, but I worried that Ted would use this speech to pad his own resume, to preach to his base, to audition for 2020. Ted should not be permitted to use this speech for his own ambitions.
Ted Cruz has allowed the Never Trump movement, with many of the members (at least the ones I see on Twitter) as Cruz supporters, to fester. He allowed the division and the attempts to free the delegates, ignoring the will of the people. That chaos on the floor the other day? Led by Cruz allies/delegates!
Ted Cruz has refused to honor a pledge that he signed, that he would have expected Trump to honor. Ted knows that his endorsement may encourage some of his supporters to vote for Trump. Ted also knows it might push some of his supporters away, the ones who would call it a betrayal. Ted is staying with the ones who would call it a betrayal.
If Ted is a true conservative, 4 years of Hillary and her stacking the court would be unthinkable. If Ted is a true Republican, he would want a Republican to win. It seems he is putting his political ambitions first. It's good for Ted Cruz (in his mind) if Trump doesn't win, but it's certainly not good for our country. I don't think it will be good for Ted either. He just doesn't realize now that 14 million Trump voters won't forget how he conducted himself.
Ted's spot should be revoked in an ideal world. Unfortunately, I think the media fallout if Trump revokes and party division with Cruz supporters who are reluctantly voting for Trump would be a problem at this point. He'll be allowed to speak, and I think he should have never been offered the slot.
Maybe CNN has absolutely blown this and will have egg on their face tomorrow. Maybe their sources will be wrong or maybe Ted will change his mind. If Ted does endorse Trump, I think opinions on him would improve.
If Cruz comes out tomorrow night and commits political suicide on national T.V., it hurts no one but Cruz. It certainly wont sway crossover Democrats or Independents not to vote for Trump. On the contrary. Most of those voters probably hate Cruz, and any lack of endorsement from him would probably make them like Trump all the more. As far as Republican NeverTrumpers, a good portion of them will finally see Cruz for the self serving fraud that he is, and get behind Trump.
If someone had dared to predict ALL of the significant developments in the Republican presidential process to date they definitely would have been laughed at. I admit that when Trump first announced I thought it was just a lark, I didn’t think he would go far, although I was not paying much attention to any of it until the primary season started. Then I quickly became convinced that Trump is our one best and only shot at both stopping Hillary and restoring some sanity to at least some national policies.... not to mention saving the US Supreme Court!!
So he gets to have face time for his own ego. I say kick him off the speaking list.
‘Cruz will tell an interviewer, You know, a lot of people forget I supported him all along.’
And he will have quotes to prove it. Very early in the race Cruz said Trump was “terrific,” and made several other similarly positive comments. If Trump succeeds as we hope he will, Cruz will trot out those early compliments, and he and his supporters will pretend none of the Trump-trashing happened.
It’s their MO.
I don’t think the Never Trump people will. I think that is who Cruz is appealing to, his base so devoted they are refusing to vote because he is out of the race. They don’t want him to endorse Trump. If you check them out on Twitter, their posts against Trump are indistinguishable from the Democrats. Their profiles usually are similar. They say ex-GOP, Christian Conservative, R.A.T. (Republican Against Trump - coined by Sarah Palin I think), and #NeverTrump. Their heroes are people like Bill Kristol.
I dont think the Never Trump people will.
What I want to know is whose suit coat is Cruz wearing in that photo?
I wonder if Mr. Cruz realizes that “Never Trump” would have been “Never Cruz” if Trump wasn’t in the race, and he was ahead? It other words, does Cruz realize that he was only used by the GO-PEE as a weapon against Trump?
Apparently that hasn’t occurred to him.
It is the MO of slimy guys in business, politics, showbiz, sports, wherever slimy guys congregate. Argue vociferously against the plan until the plan proves wildly successful. Then claim you supported it 100 percent all the time.
I agree with you in part. There certainly is a fringe group of the NeverTrump movement that will not abandon their messiah, even if he shows himself to be a backstabbing, Hillary supporting traitor. But I think there are some, maybe half or more, for whom such behavior by Cruz will be the last straw for them. I think Trump understands this, which is why he agreed to let Cruz speak. Trump has weighed the risks and understands he has little to lose from letting Cruz speak.
Give him enough rope to hang himself.
I have the opposite hunch, Ted Cruz will endorse Donald Trump and do so with as much conviction as he can summon up. He will do this because he knows that the nation has to go one way or the other at this point in time and there are no second chances. I don’t know what’s in his mind or heart going into this opportunity to speak, but he may not have totally decided. He should do so. Take a minute to imagine America after four more years of Democrat rule. In some ways Hillary Clinton could be worse than Obama. I realize that is a very difficult thing to imagine. Ted Cruz can have a future in national politics, but only if he endorses Trump and assists to whatever extent is possible in getting Trump elected. I think one Trump term will naturally lead to another, health being the only constraint, so if Ted Cruz really wants to be president, he should think about continuing on with the gains made under Trump, in 2024. And he can only appear like a credible successor if he co-operates and does not appear to be a plotter as Mitt Romney appears to be.
Personally, I am not convinced that any of the Plotting Ted narrative holds water. This is partly conjecture based on a lack of endorsement. But maybe the plan for some time has been to create a bit of suspense and offer what Trump supporters will see as a welcome surprise. And frankly, I can’t imagine Cruz being invited to speak on any other basis.
So we shall see, and someone will be right, others wrong in varying degrees, about this, but whatever happens, I am behind Donald Trump until his course is run.
God bless the United States of America.
He will become another John McCain to me.
‘Nuf said.
LOL....but he lost his glotch long ago and so no longer needs that Bogel. ;^)
“Voters? Where we’re going, we don’t need voters!”
Watch out for little Marco as well tomorrow.
He’ll chase Teddy McCruz around the town square and crash into a truck full of foam. Okay, that’s taking the Back to the Future thing beyond its use.
Well done. Good Chuckle.
Teddy is STUPID and doesn't realize that short of a military coup, which won't happen, Hillary will serve two terms, unless she dies in office.
Cruz is NOT a "team player" and there IS a very good reason why so many people have loathed him, all of his conniving little lie filled life.
