Pence eats at Chili’s in NY, Twitter erupts

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Shortly after being officially introduced as Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was trending on Twitter — but it had nothing to do with politics.

Pence posted a photo of his family eating at a Chili’s restaurant in New York, prompting a storm of tweets.

Trump caught grief in NY for eating pizza with a fork

So did some other pol - was it de Blasio? Shh, don't tell anyone, but in Italy it is common to see people eat pizza with a knife and fork.

You are taking this way too serious. New Yorkers are always going to rib out-of-towners for being touristy. There are some definite dos and donts and Pence committed one of the more egregious tourist blunders by dining at a casual eating chain when there are thousands of authentic NYC restaurants.

Not all of them are fancy either. Just last week, I took my son to O'Hara's Pub at 120 Cedar Street, just a couple blocks from ground zero. The walls there are covered with fire department badges from all the departments that helped out during 9/11. Would have been cool for Pence and his family to have been seen there. I'm surprised Trump didn't steer him to a place like that. I think once the convention is over, Trump will have a little more influence over Pence's schedule.

Anyway, no major harm done. Doubt it's going to affect anybody's vote. Might actually play well in his neck of the woods - hey, a VP presidential candidate goes to NYC and eats at Chili'!

I would have steered Pence to Old McSorley’s Ale House on E 7th. Good think he doesn’t take advice from me. He’d be sleeping it off. They only let you order beer two glasses at a time and they keep coming and coming.

I'm taking it seriously? All I saw was the prospective VP candidate minding his own business. However, these sentences, as well as the earlier "bad optics" comment, suggest that the poster thinks Mr. Pence's dining reflected poorly on the Trump image:

Pence committed one of the more egregious tourist blunders

Would have been cool for Pence and his family to have been seen there.

Humor is the best way to counter these attacks. Something that Romney and McPain could have used to their advantage in previous elections but they were stiff as cardboard. People just didn't warm up to them.

Trump is a master at dishing it right back with some wit. Hopefully we will see the same from Pence.

Be cool if Trump and Giuliani take Pence to Vince's Clam Bar in Little Italy sometime. That was my favorite spot when I was a young'un. :-)

Plate of hot shrimp and a Heinekin...

It is my assumption that anyone criticizing Mr. Pence would never have voted Republican anyway.

Personally, I like the fact that Mr. Pence did pretend the unique dining options of New York matter to him, when they obviously don't. I certainly don't see how his being a poseur would help the campaign.

Don't make that assumption. Some of us are just trying to help him and give him good advice. I'm sure Mike Dukakis would have appreciated somebody telling him it was a bad idea to get into that tank. My advice to Pence for next time he's in the city is to go to a working class pub like the O'Hara's Pub I mentioned earlier that is a 9/11 shrine. That gives him the "everyman" cred that should help him with NYC voters. I'm not talking a 4-star "striped pants" restaurant with 7 courses. That would not be good either as it would portray Pence as a typical upper crust country club Republican. There are thousands of places here in the city where working class and middle class people go and it's not that expensive.

But we all might be making a mountain out of a molehill. I believe on the campaign trail, Trump himself will occasionally stay at a budget hotel chain like Hampton Inn or Marriott Courtyard. I think Trump even ate at an Applebees and ordered his steak well done. So what do I know.

That Taco Bell is in the best location for a Taco Bell in all of America. The sunsets are incredible.

I used to hike and bike up the street from there.

The floor was always sandy from the surfers!

I had to go back to this photo after hearing about the photo controversy. His daughter is not in the mirror image. Everyone wants to know if she is a vampire.

Everyone wants to know if she is a vampire.

Maybe having an undead daughter will win him back the coolness points he lost by eating at Chili's.
