As dawn broke in Istanbul on Saturday, Turkey's largest city, it was still unclear whether an attempt by the military to wrest control from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had been successful.
A defiant Erdogan addressed crowds in the city, telling them that the coup had been quashed. "The government is in control," he told supporters.

The first stories are almost always wrong. I only saw that report on one site, and they make stuff up out of thin air.
Do we really know who is responsible for the attempted coup? According to NBC, Edrogan is blaming a radical who’s in exile in Pennsylvania.
They will be using this coup as an example that lower ranked officers should not bite off more than they can chew.
There is probably going to be some openings at the Battalion Commander position starting this morning.
Edrogen is a dictator in the making. A successful coup would have been a plus for us.
But they left the radios on, they left the TVs on, and the did not shoot Edrogen at the outset.
Gulen has donated generously to the Clinton Foundation and Campaign.
Like they did in Honduras? They picked up in a helicopter the offending President Mel Zelaya in his PJs and flew him across the Costa Rico border and dropped him off.
Smile
Can't blame him on this one. If you are a powerful foreign figure, bribing the Clintons is money well-spent.
No we don’t know. There will be so much smoke and mirrors for years over this. What it reveals beyond doubt, however, is what a divided, fragile paper tiger Turkey is. And they are the main prop for all of this administration’s evil work in the Middle East.
to succeed at a coup, one must kill the king
They should have started the coup by putting a bullet in Erdogan’s head, that would have ensured win or lose, at least he wouldn’t be returning to power.
It is a catastrophy.
And large helpings of the blame lies with the United States and with the EU.
Shambles.
Yep, which Obama of course supports. His Muslim brotherhood comes before anything else and I can imagine him and Jarrett are fist bumping with glee about it. These military guys were trying to save their country from this Islamic puke now it’s going to be hell on earth there.
This entire fake coup was staged from the beginning to give him absolute power. Erdogan gave it away when he called it a “gift from Allah.”
“I bet Putin will work hard to ensure that it happens like the one he facilitated in Egypt.”
Vlad will not tolerate a radical Islamic controlled Turkey!
I've always had this gut feeling that both Erdogan and former president Mahmoud Ahmenijhad were very evil men in private even though they wore smiles in public. Then I learned they both want the caliphate to be declared so the AntiChrist can rise. Then of course Obma supports them and is a closet Muslim. Same with Hillary who has been said to be a witch that attends a church in Los Angeles. In other words we are seeing the rise of a form of Satanism cloaked as Islam to a new level with world leaders falling in line to promote it.
That’s true and lots of analysts expect that a larger part Turkey will look to overthrow him again. And then Putin will intervene and ensure it.
>> The Rand Corp just put out a study which showed that Russia can destroy NATO on the Eurasian continent in 60 hours.
> Interesting... Do you know of a link?
That story has seriously distorted on its way. The RAND study in question said that with current NATO deployments Russian surprise attack with 27 battalions could take Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius in 60 hours.

That is the tremendous danger here, a major conflagration as the destabilization increases. Russia cannot allow an Islamist Turkey (neither can Europe, but they are too corrupted - and perhaps will be in the throes of civil conflict - to stop it). Under Obama, the U.S. Is in a terrible position to impact the situation, and thus will lose influence in the region to an extent unimaginable before Obama. We will diddle and passively support the Islamists...and Russian influence could increase dramatically.
Turkey could become another Syria with a horrible civil war lasting for years, creating more refugees if the current rulers stay in power.
Putin will probably not tolerate that.
