As dawn broke in Istanbul on Saturday, Turkey's largest city, it was still unclear whether an attempt by the military to wrest control from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had been successful.

A defiant Erdogan addressed crowds in the city, telling them that the coup had been quashed. "The government is in control," he told supporters.

I admit I didn’t read the linked article, but I’ve heard that the military has the capitol and Erdo has Instanbul, who’s tower at first wouldn’t let him land? Caption on Fox says ‘coup won’t succeed’, instead of ‘coup didn’t succeed’. Is it still a fluid situation?

An earlier report said that the coup leaders were Islamic extremists.

Is that the new meme?

I’ve seen better coup’s at my local Cadillac dealer.

I've seen better coops on a chicken farm.

The planners should have known the de Ville is de tails (lights.)

Nah, it's over.

The whole damned thing is suspicious - this seemed to fold so quickly. Social media call for people in the streets - unarmed people - causes the military to immediately stand down. Turned it around on a dime. I don’t know, there’s a lot happening we aren’t seeing.

The army cut off the TV transmission, and disabled the telecommunications, except the mobile data are still working. I'd read wanna_be emperor of reincarnated ottoman erdogan landed at Istanbul Ataturk Airport, how could be in the middle of military uprising or coup d’etat?

If it’s true that the coup failed, it’s going to be truly awful for Turkey and the world. There will be a non benevolent Islamo dictator in control.

I’m curious as to what our CIA may have known about this.

Oh, and BO, Hillary and Kerry need to burn in hell.

The planners forgot the first rule of coups: first, you kill the king.

The let the king escape.

First, he turned up on Face Time, exhorting his supporters to hit the streets. They did. And then they retook Ataturk Airport in time for him to land safely (back from his vacation on the Mediterranean) and address the nation.

Not how a proper coup should work.

What was all this about? Was the military trying to restore secular government?

The coup was setup by Erdogan himself imho. Coup 101. First mission of any coup, Capture/kill the leader. It always fail if you fail to do this

So a coup, captured a few government buildings. Big deal. Success of any coup is to take control of the LEADER/of the people in charge

> Now the executions begin.

Probably be done in an underground bunkers and the execution squad killed afterward to hide the tracks. Looks like Erdogan found out who weren't loyal. I keep hearing rumors and seeing information about him supposedly being a key figure in declaration of the caliphate and the rise of the AntiChrist. Didn't know if it was just conspiracy BS but now I'm starting to wonder.

There won’t be a next time. Erdogan had good intelligence (i.e., his intelligence had penetrated the military) that this was coming, and he used it to his advantage.

An element within the military. To embolden them, the leaders of this coup were told that the entire military was behind them, that they had massive support among the troops and the command structure.

They stepped into the trap.

What disgusts me is that NATO, and possibly even the U.S., provided military support to Erdogan during this. Otherwise, he would not have landed at the airport in Istanbul last night.
