Trump Slashes TV Appearances as Advisers Clash Over Controlling His Message
Fox News ^ | Friday, July 8, 2016 | Howard Kurtz

Donald Trump, in a sharp shift in strategy, is now refusing to appear on many television outlets, and top advisers who want to limit his exposure are no longer notifying him of every interview request.

According to sources familiar with the campaign, one faction is worried that the constant rounds of interviews entail too much risk of the candidate making mistakes or fanning minor controversies, even though his mastery at driving the media agenda helped power his Republican primary victory.

A series of clashes over these and other tactical questions has caused Trump himself to openly question who is running his campaign, the sources say. And he has expressed anger when he believes his orders aren’t being followed.

On the media front, Trump is no longer appearing on CNN or MSNBC. He is staying off the Sunday talk shows. Nearly all his national television interviews since June 1 have been with Fox News.

This more restrictive approach, combined with recent incidents in which some aides have acted contrary to Trump’s wishes, suggests a power shift as his children and especially his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, play an increasingly influential role.

Trump, who has resumed his full-throated denunciations of the media—such as calling CNN the Clinton News Network—personally vetted every TV invitation for most of the campaign. Now the staff is weeding out many requests without consulting him, the sources say, which could either be viewed as a mark of professionalization or an attempt to restrain Trump from being Trump.

Those in the caution camp want to avoid any repetition of Trump’s March sitdown with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, when he stumbled in suggesting that women should be punished for abortions. They do not share the candidate’s boundless confidence in taking on all media adversaries.

Many a good candidate has been ruined by his advisors advocating ‘play it safe’.

One of those was Ronald Reagan. As the 1980 campaign began, his campaign manager John Sears advised him to play it safe, and for a while, it looked as though he would lose to George Bush. I believe it was Richard Viguerie who said that Reagan had been "Searscomcized." Reagan's campaign finally took off when he fired Sears in February, 1980.

The weekend, shows will be dominated by dead police officers, Hillary blaming white people and the need for gun control. We’ll see more BLM protests and Democrats calling Rudy Giuliani a racist. By Monday, Americans will be ready to vomit!

Next week, we will see police memorials, police officers honored and celebrated, and their family members mourning.

Trump doesn’t need to say anything this weekend. Next week, he will have a lot to say. Behind the scenes, Trump is working on winning.

And we will roll right into the VP pick and the GOP convention!!!!

That is all true, it just is pointless though. He needs to stay out of the weeds. He really should beat Hillary handily. Primary was one thing. He needs to not lose any support.

Kurtz is much better than most liberals. He seems to try to be fair.

Gee, you sound like an expert. Some of his advisors are family.

His son-in-law, Kushner and Manafort are hardly “Lilliputian.”

While most agree with you, that is easier said than done, he needs these political guys to get thru the convention, remember the cruzites have joined with the bushites, the log cabin romneys, and dozens of more to steal the convention.

He needs the 'advisors and professional insiders' to get thru the convention.

I agree with the anticipation suggestion. The VP vetting process keeps voters wondering and thinking who Trump's "surprise" pick will be.

Anyway, it seems there were times when Trump stumbled, I think, due to over work. He hides exhaustion well.

[ There is only one more week until the GOP convention. Look for a lot of this, this week]

Yup. The media know there is a coup brewing and are doing everything they can to escalate it.

They would prefer a dead and gone republican party to an honest man.

Donald is not to be underestimated, he did not get to where he is by being stupid and without extremely loyal friends and family.

Many within that group, feel that he can win as a third party or even, preferably, as a write in candidate, which woud trigger a human count of the ballots.

As usual I agree with your analysis. I wonder if you have any insight on this matter. It seems like the Rats have put a media blockout on Trump. I have noticed this for a few weeks. The few articles are obviously showing Trump in a bad light. I think he was counting on more exposure like the primaries.

I have only seen his ads on FR. I haven’t seen an ad for Trump on TV. Hillary ads are all over the place. Do you think Trump should try to control the narrative that Hillary is bad for POTUS just because of her stupidity and failure as SOS. I don’t think a little more would hurt. He should also get out in front of the BLM riots that Obama/Hillary are planning. I am in the Phila. area. Trump is doing well in Pa. It would be nice to see him trample her in Pa. Lots of Vets in Philly area also. Just MHO.

Yup. You tell 'em big shot. Trump should fire his three children and son-in-law.

Everyone's a friggin expert here. How many experts on this thread have ever run for national political office? Trump built his empire listening to other people because he knows he's inexperienced in politics. He doesn't work in a vacuum.

My opinion...the reason your seeing so many ads on Hillary in Pa is she has to have that commonwealth...I used to live in PA for 20 years, worked on the Santorum campaign, we had all of PA red, except for Philly, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh and we got wiped out...

Trump is well liked in PA because of the Coal...he doesn't like the ads, he thinks they are a waste of money, will he run some, yes...I have seen some here in Utah put out by the NRA and a few others, Utah is not in play in this election, no matter how hard Romney thinks it is, it isn't...

The media isn't blacking Trump out, he's fed up over his ears with the media, he's doing this himself...if he isn't there, they don't make money...if you have noticed, FNC since he hasn't been there for a while, once in a while for O’Reilly, and Fox and Friends, Hannity, they are going down the tubes, he generates money, he's not there, no ratings no money...this is his way of controlling the media...

She on the other hand thinks back in the 90’s, she hasn't got common sense to see that if your not generating ratings your not generating money...(Art of the Deal)...

He is social media, and he's on face book and on twitter, I quit face book, I am now only on twitter and I can tell you he has ads there, and he lets people know on social media what is going on...

T.V. is a con game, she runs this, but if she doesn't buy their time, which is millions of dollars, they don't cover her either...she can't run an email system, what makes anyone think she can run a country? If it wasn't for her money, she would be in a hell hole in some other country...

Grampa Dave, do you happen to have that award handy— the wonderful recognition you occasionally hand out to the great unsung advisors of the Trump campaign?

Meh!
Just hot air and filling empty space from Kurtz.

Who cares what he thinks he thinks

NO ONE can command interest and excitement on the airwaves better than Trump.
And he didn’t get where he is by allowing helpers to lead him by the nose.

This is pure drivel.

Well Fantasy I think it's safe to assume that someone from the Trump campaign monitors FR. And if we offer enough advice that there's a chance that someone from that campaign will notice a trend in conservative thought on certain issues and may modify their strategy based on how things are being received here on FR.

That's all that's happening here. It's not an attempt to show how smart we are but rather an attempt to influence and bend the minds of Americans.
